Re: m91 stock restoration

I have a 1926 tikka m91 that has a clear coat on the stock, it looks like it might have been a sprayed on clear lacquer as there are some runs. I was thinking of trying to remove the clear with some lacquer thinner and then treating it with linseed oil/pine tar to look more like the original stock....

Flame birch is a variant of usually Betula pendula or more rarely Betula pubescens. The pattern is further enhanced by "kiväärintukkiöljy" oil finish.

Re: Finnish M28/30

Its a 1939 Sako rifle in absolutely beautiful condition. The bluing and stock on it are nearly perfect, leading me to believe that it either didn't see much action or it was refurbished with a new stock after the war at some point. The stock appears to be Finnish Defence Forces replacement stock wi...

It's a Civil Guard muzzle cover fro m/28 rifle. Finnish Defence Forces later marked it with [SA].

According to indices I have gathered, this is one of the rifles that once belonged to Luumäki Civil Guard at Viipuri Civil Guard District.

Re: Help with an M39 please

Are there various height front sight posts made for the M39? How would I solve the problem once I identify the height discrepancy? According to Ministry of Defence (of Finland)'s m/39 blueprint 46-4-2, dated 22 October 1940, front sights were originally available every 0.2 millimetres from 6.4 to 8...

Re: Help with an M39 please

How would one acquire a (much) taller front sight post? I don't see a difference of 28 grains being enough to drop an additional approximate 20" at 300 yards. But regardless if I had a taller front sight post it would fix this problem. For precise calculations, I think you should first try sho...

Re: Help with an M39 please

Oh, and was Finnish doctrine to line the front sight on the bottom of the target? I used a couple different types of ammo today and all were way high. I ended up aiming what was about 8" low on the target at 300 yards to hit seven inches high with the sights at 150 m! They didn't build the M39...

Re: M39 STOCK AND BARREL

WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS - SHOULD THE END OF THE BARREL TOUCH THE END OF THE STOCK OR SHOULD THERE BE A GAP ALL THE WAY AROUND IT IN ORDER TO ALLOW THE BARREL TO FLOAT??? According to 1959 and 1978 Finnish Defence Forces standing orders, the barrel should be in contact with the stock only at the fron...

Re: Help with an M39 please

That's interesting. I was under the impression that as they upgraded their rifles from the M24 up to the M39, they'd upgrade the specs when a rifle came in to be fixed for something. As in, say an M27 came in with a cracked stock in 1942, it may be brought up to M39 specs before being returned to s...

Re: Help with an M39 please

I just watched a video by Ian of Forgotten Weapons on the Finnish Mosins and he showed a circular mark in a butt stock that was once an Army unit "medallion" of sorts, identifying that the rifle belonged to whatever Army brigade or however they categorize things over there. But that after...

Re: Help with an M39 please

What are considered average groups at 100m/yd with good to match ammo? I have some S&B 180 grain FMJ brass ammo and will be getting some PPU 182 gr match ammo when I can finally find some. According to one factory acceptance test, the average result for a 1943 m/39 (n=128) with D-166 round was ...

Re: Bohler-Stahl Lotta M24 stocks

Yup, at least as expensive as one of the rifles and probably more collectable since there are probably less than 100 sets in the U.S. but they have some great info in them. It should noted the information in Palokangas' book "Sotilaskäsiaseet Suomessa 1918-1988" is outdated. Palokangas ca...

Re: 2 roll stamped on 1941 SAKO M39 barrel

I'm going to revisit a sporadic topic regarding the meaning of a "2" stamped on a Finnish barrel. I suspect that the 2 has something to do with the initial production. Perhaps Sako maintained a second production site or production line, especially since the 2 was roll stamped onto the bar...

Re: M39 Bore condition

Anyone with more experience than me (newb) care to evaluate the bore condition on my M39? According to 1947 and 1978 Finnish Defence Forces regulations, the overall bore condition is around 2-3. The scale goes from 0 (or 1) to 4, where 0 (or 1) is best possible. However, some parts of the bore migh...

I didn't find any shims when I took the rifle apart for cleaning and I didn't notice any imprints of the previous shims at that time but I wasn't really looking for them either, so I'll take another look and inspect those areas more carefully The correct Finnish barrel bedding style from the mid-19...

Re: Finnish Mosin M39 bore

I was contacted some years back by a former member of the Finnish army who recalled firing M39's on the range during his service in 1982. He saw one of my M39's in a youtube video and commented on the rifle, it was one of the late 60's date rifles. All Finnish conscripts were issued a RK-60 or 62 a...

Re: Finnish Mosin M39 bore

It is my understanding that along with weapons vast amounts of Soviet made ammunition was captured during the Winter War. Was none of this later issued for use by Finnish troops? Do keep in mind that most of the Finnish infantry were not equipped with a m/39 during the Continuation War but with m/9...

Re: Finnish Mosin M39 bore

A shiny bore on a rifle used in a vicious war during the era of corrosive primed ammunition is nothing short of unbelievable, and show the result of having highly trained and disciplined troops. M/39 rifles were originally issued with Finnish D166 ammunition with Sinoxid (Latin for "non oxidat...

Re: Is there any way to find out who had my rifle?

What about Finnish captures? Not captures, but with Finnish Civil Guard rifles there is a chance that the information of the rifle is preserved in Finnish archives. I have started to create indices of non-Civil Guard firearms for research, e.g.: The History of an Individual Finnish Defence Forces M...
