Head Space
It's that what you're looking for with a field gauge?

Re: Head Space
Yes, the field gauge, or the No/go. Any resistance on the bolt closing no matter how light is a pass. Never force a bolt down on a gauge. You are good to go with the headspace.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Tests will only give you a rough idea that things are OK, but only by shooting it will you know it's habits.

Re: Head Space
I haven't found a gun that wasn't fun to shoot! I also found motivation to get a Tula. A co worker of mine lived there for 5 years and told me the armory is "much better" than the Izhevsk ;)
Re: Head Space
"Hug" her in tight, breath slowly and SQUEEZE.....these rifles will produce some VERY acceptable groups.
