Couple of markings I would appreciate some help with...

Post by NLMosin »

I picked up an M39 and this is the marking on the tang...Is the 1 just missing? The date below the serial is 1941 but The Finns mixed parts didnt they?
tang.jpg
I also picked up a Finn capture. The PP's I understand but anyone know about the 'D' above the PP's and the '3' above the crest? Thanks in advance. :)

The top one is a 1915. The D means the chamber throat has been opened up to take the D bullet.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Thanks millman! So was the opening of the throat done by the Finns or was it done in an earlier refurb?

The D mod was done by the Finns. The PP was added by the importer, its the English translation of the serial number prefix.

Early Mosins didn't have the "1" stamped. So, 1915 Tula.

equation, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a
computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.
