Just got back with my Chinese #53. Metal looks pretty good as does the bore, but the wood is pretty knarly. It's a 1954 and all the numbers match except for the bolt. Have to head off to work so won't be able to post any pics. until my day off monday. But from the range of conditions i have seen a guess i'm happy ??????

Heys Guys It's late and home from work, here's a couple of quick pics, just to give you a idea of how knarly the stock is, just out of the box. Will post more and better pics. later.

For a Chinese rifle, that isn't that bad. With the grime off, and some lemon oil, it will be fine. More importantly what does the bore look like?

That stock is about what my T53 looks like. After cleaning the grime off I used food grade walnut oil on my stock. It's what I use on maple butcher blocks and salad bowls for a natural finish.

Had some time before work this morning for a few pics. Best why to clean the stock ? I'm thinking steel wool and mineral spirits ?

Use Naptha, lighter fluid, in small areas at a time. Don't soak the stock, just rub the dirt off. Once cleaned, rub on tung oil. The advantage of lighter fluid is that it evaporates quickly and won't raise the grain of the wood. Also do in an area well ventilated and no smoking.

Don't use any solvents on it. You run the risk of really screwing it up. Most Chinese T 53's will not come with a cleaning rod

Just clean it with something like lemon oil and enjoy it the way it is. I wouldn't refinish it.
