Watching the Grit channel earlier and I kept seeing a commercial for a John Wayne movie and it shows him with a Winchester (I assume) or some lever action rifle, with the saddle ring sticking straight out. Call me dumb, uneducated or something, but it made me wonder how exactly the saddle ring was used, so I had to Google it.

So it was basically the single point aka tacticool sling of the day. Saw where it could be worn by the soldier, or attached to the saddle horn etc. I just honestly never understood how it was used, and really don't recall movies or shows showing it being utilized.

Guess I'm never to old to learn something new or is it something old....?

Goes back to before the war, I have one someplace for my trapdoor carbine, and the NYS Remington rolling block carbine. It's a carbine thing, you will not see it on full size rifles as these were not favored by cavalry troops.

Noticed in my readings/education that some of the US Military used carbines had a bar versus a ring. Interesting what you learn when you're watching a movie/show and Google something you didn't know.

They do have a bar, same idea, just a slightly different way of going about it. Man on horseback needs to be able to drop his rifle to control the mount sometimes, or to use the saber when things get close.

Civil Ware era
My Spencer Carbine has a bar that the Ring would slide on.
. I think the "Smith Carbine" and Sharp's carbines also had a bar and ring.



Post Civil War
My Springfield Trapdoor also had a "bar" that the "ring" would "slide" on.
. Don't recall a "bar" with out the ring.

I think a "ring" by itself came after the Civil war.

Don't recall a "bar" with out the ring.

I think a "ring" by itself came after the Civil war.

Sweet looking rifles there. True, about the ring on the bar, I was typing too damn quick for my brain to keep up.

Correct me if I misquote this information. From what I read, and which you also wrote above, military carbines had a sling/saddle bar with the ring attached to it.

Then later on companies like Winchester added a ring only to their commercial carbines/rifles. Like in the John Wayne picture I posted at the beginning of this topic.

Still learning here.....So go easy on me Teacher!

That sounds right.

The bar and ring was to hook their sling that went over their shoulder when on a hoarse (like Jim said).
It was called a staple ring, sling ring, or stud.

I'm not sure what the "ring" only on the Winchesters were for. I have seen the rifles in a "scabbard" on horses and it had a "tie" on the top of the Scabbard to tie to the ring. I think to keep it from falling out when the horse gets going. But, I'm not an expert there. Winchesters were not used by the military in any great numbers. They stuck with the single shot Rolling Block till they went to the bolt action for the most part. The "ring" was not used with a "sling" on a Winchester. (I don't think).

I'm not an expert on this and just going from memory.
