Post by xjda68 »

This item made of steel fits an M44 perfectly. What is it? Grenade launcher? Bore cleaning guide?

Looks like a grenade launcher spigot, but all the ones I've seen have grooves or ridges. Below is what a Mosin Nagant grenade launcher looks like.

Here you can see what a typical grenade spigot looks like.

That is cool, but I have never seen one before, just the big fat ones as pictured above.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I've done another search, and I cannot come up with a Russian/Soviet/ComBloc Mosin Nagant spigot style grenade launcher. All I can find is the type I referenced earlier, which here is another example of it with all the accessories. This style locks around the front sight like the bayonet does.

So I cannot come up with an answer or ID on the item the OP posted. Looks like a spigot grenade launcher, but almost every example I see has grooves in it. The few I see without the grooves don't match the OPs.

Are there any markings at all on this one?

Mike,

There are no makings at all. I looked really close with magnification in various lighting.
If it was SOVIET, there would truly be some marking one would think.

This is also a mystery to my friends that collect Mosin Nagants.

It fits an M44 carbine perfectly. It came recently out of a deceased Korean War veterans' estate. He was a USMC radioman. Maybe it is NK made or Chinese made?

I'll do some more digging and see what I might be able to come up with.

I cross posted your spigot on another forum, a member who answered the post is asking for the "Diameter of the spigot...iirc, the hungarian is 16mm or .630".

So if you could get that measurement we might be able to ID it.
