Is there a definite way to determine that the receiver is antique that keeps a fellow out of the BATFE grasp if one is sold as antique
What is the definitive proof that they are on antique receivers?

If the receiver is of the 1898 type then it is a " modern " rifle, if it is the 1893, or the 1888 type then it is antique as all of these were produced before 1899.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I have a Gew 88/05/35 and it is treated as a C&R. Reason is the Turks scrubbed the receiver so its impossible to determine the production date. Most of the sites on the web say the Gew 88 production dates were from 1888-1899 so that last year would not make it a antique. If you can determine the production date of 1898 or earlier then treat it as a antique for sure.
