GERD / Acid Reflux

Post by ffuries »

Whatever it is that has affected me is kicking my ass. It started in July, I have a consult in September, with a cancelation notice to get in earlier. Scheduled for CT Scans, and Abdominal Ultrasound also. Consult will determine if I need an Endoscopy or what.

All I know is, if I bend over, kneel down, squat, or picked stuff and move it around, it kicks in bad, walk too quick same thing. A good analogy would be walking to fast or moving around too much with a bowel full of water, those movements make the water slosh. I'm having several episodes a day. I'm up till midnight or later until I'm able lay down and go to sleep. I'm not a person that suffered from heartburn like some people, I might have had 1 or 2 episodes a month if that. This shit is kicking my ass, this shit starts in the mid torso range, and travels up, it mimics a heart attack (Chest pain, arm pain, neck pain, etc), which we have ruled out.

They've increased my Prilosec from 20 to 40 mg's a day, and Tums has become my new best friend. No spicy food, nothing acidic, no sweets, I eat a bland lunch and dinner.....Hell I weighed in at 231 lbs 3 weeks ago and now I'm at 223 lbs with eating just two small meals a day.

I've been taking one 40mg of Pantoprazole twice a day for about 8 years now.

It works.

Never had this issue before, it started the first part of July and damn is it bad. At night I try to lay down, and if it starts, I go to the living and play games on the Xbox One, until I can lay down. Some nights midnight is golden, some nights it's not until 0400 that I can lay down.

Trying to cut out anything and everything that can aggravate the issue. No cookies, chocolate, acidic foods, seasoned foods, greasy food, or fatty foods. Man life sucks when you can't eat BACON and CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES......

Same here only about four years. It works. I went from a couple of bottles of Maalox a week to one every three or four months.

You're gonna think I'm nuts but when you have tummy problems or something just isn't sitting right eat a Fudgesicle.

It must coat the stomach lining or something but it does settle things down.

Wife had gastric reflux like you described, took her doctor about 6 months to find the right brand of meds to work on her. Then a year latter her insurance quit covering her prescribed meds and switched to a "comparable" generic which didn't work at all.

So she tried my Walgreens otc pills for it and all is good now. So you may want to try a couple of different brands between now and your appointment.

This might be a wild card to have your docs look at but have them check your blood calcium & PTH levels. A couple years ago I started having the same types of symptoms, just random heart-burn, half throwing-up from it when I'd lay down, along with some other issues. My doc's didn't know what was wrong and wanted to start a bunch of random meds. Dr "Mom" saw my blood tests and said I needed to look into parathyroid related issues, which she had gone through for over a decade before finally finding a doc that got her help. My regular doc said no, my levels were well within their norms. My endocrinologist laughed and said no, not a chance. I gave my data to the folks that specialize in parathyroid issues and helped my mom and they said I needed to come in. So I flew across the country and had surgery. In my moms case, she had 1 (of 4) parathyroids having a growth on it. I came out and they told me that I had growths on all 4 of them. They took out three and "trimmed" one back to health and replaced it.

All my heartburn and other related issues were gone within the week. What nobody could figure out is how after all that, I no longer needed my thyroid meds (thyroid/parathyroids are completely unrelated except geography).

Not saying it's related for you but might be worth a consideration. In my case, my PTH was fairly normal but my blood calcium was 10.4 (peaked at 10.7). For my age, my doc & endo said up to 10.5 was fine. The parathyroid specialist said anything above 10.1 for my age would suggest a problem.

Hope they get you figured out!

I did, showed them the photo of the 4 parathyroids with adenomas on them and then told them they were both fired and found new doctors.

We just relocated to Tennessee, so now I need to start that search all over again. Finding a good endo isn't easy.
