What powders are you using for reloading for Mosins

Post by billybob123 »

I have some 150 gr sierra and 180 grain and have a M38 and chicom carbine. What powders have you used for the short barreled mosins that give good accuracy. Not concerned about shooting super long range would just like something that gives me good velocity and accuracy out to a max of 500 yards.

H4895 is generally my go-to powder for the Mosin. Works well in the carbines as well as the longer variants. I've also used 4064 and Varget with good success.

I have used IMR 4895 as well as IMR 4064 with good results. I have a full pound of Varget, but have yet to load any 7.62x54r with it.

I don't reload 7.62x54, but have used 4064 with good results in 6.5x55 and .303.

I have two Mosins and I also have a 8 pound can of IMR 4064 and it works really well for me with them. I also have a pound of Accurate 5744 on my Mosins.

IMR 4064 and Varget are the two I have used, both with good results.

Where is a good place to find x54 cases? I would be interested in doing a little reloading for my M44.

I have found very few places that have 54R on hand for very long. As soon as they get it it's gone. I have resolved to buying PPU factory rounds, shooting them at paper and then reloading the cases.
I just looked at Diamond K Brass and they have it listed in stock, 25 pieces for $11. Before shipping thats 44 cents a case.

Sometimes Graf and Sons has it on hand for $.50 a case IIRC. You have to catch them with it on hand and order it right away, it doesn't last long. Right now they have it on sale @ 50 pieces for $21.74, that's $.43 a case.

I am currently working up an IMR4166 load for 174 SMKs. I have had good success with Varget, H4350, and 760. Moving to 4166 for its temperature insensitivity, and copper eliminating properties.

Hogden H380
If I reload 7.62x54r. But I don't reload that round much.

This was Kari's favorite powder.

Kari turned me on to the H380 for 6.5x55. It makes a very accurate load with little 107 grain SMKs, but you run into ignition issues when the temp drops. Winter temps brought sooty cases and hang fires.

I scored 16 lbs. of the old Ammo Mart (a Canadian company) 44 powder, which is a close cousin to 3031. I was cautioned by those in the know to be mindful that 44 was famous for deteriorating. I checked all the little cardboard containers and found the powder to be in good condition. I moved the powder to plastic containers. It had been stored in the same room at a good temperature for all the years since it was purchased.  I use 3031 data and load .303, 8x57, 7.62x54R with it.

Long story short - I use 3031 equivelant.

Kjohn that is interesting. Do you still have the cardboard containers? I’d be interested in seeing a picture. I have been on the hunt for powders lately. Found a pound of IMR3031 for my brother, a few different powders for handgun loads, and some Hogdon 4895 for all my milsurp stuff. It’s still around at normal prices but most of it has jacked up prices and that don’t interest me.
