So I’m new to identifying Mosins and all their marks. I was led to believe that I had a 91/30 when I bought mine a year ago. I finally started looking at the markings and noticed it was dated 1927. I believe it was made by Tula, but I haven’t had the greatest success in getting too much information on it as I’ve only been able to find one picture of a similar receiver stamping. I found another that listed production ending in 1926 in the format that mine is in. Please let me know your thoughts and if you know more on it.

What you have is an updated dragoon rifle, if you look at the import marking on the side of your rifles receiver you will see 91/30 on it. Started off with older dragoon rifle sights, and later was updated to 91/30 spec.

So what exactly does that mean? What’s the difference between a dragoon and the updated version?

They changed the front and rear sight to 91/30 spec, and changed the bands from solid ring to split ring. Often times these post WW2 refurbished rifles can have replacement stocks, and the usual mix of parts from any era of Mosin production. The serial numbers on buttplate, mag , and bolt body are force matched to the barrel serial. Dragoon and 91/30 are the same length. All 91/30's with dates before 1930 started off life as dragoon's, and most made 1930-33 were also dragoon rifles until the old parts supply ran out, and the new style parts phased in.

Am I right in thinking that as well as the sights and barrel bands being changed to 91/30 spec they also changed the handguard as well?.

My ex-Dragoon is a 1926 Izhevsk.....
I think I'm right in saying there are also ex-Cossack rifles, but they are less common than ex-Dragoons.
