Shooting lead with polygonal rifling

Post by SteveC »

Has anyone tried shooting unjacketed bullets with their Cz 82 or any other polygonal rifling gun? I'm thinking about reloading and it sure would be nice to be able to cast my own bullets, but I've read horror stories about blowing up barrels with lead bullets.

I don't believe this is a good idea as the poly rifling will really lead up. Has something to d with the shape of the bore that causes the problem.

The problem is as stated with leading. Glock specifically states that use of lead is dangerous. All of the pistol makers state that the use of reloads will 'void' their warranty. Getting lead out of a Glock barrel is a real PIA. :beek:
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

You can get 'Rifled' barrels for Glocks so you can use lead bullet reloads in them, however the leading is a result of the bullet softness as well as the polygonal rifling. getting the crap out is a pain.

I believe there is a replacement "rifled" barrel for the cz82 also.

That would make it better.

Problem is, after buying the barrel, the cost of "reloading" goes up too high. Unless you just love to reload which is a good reason!

Do not use soft lead in modern weapons, the soft stuff is for muzzleloaders. The addition of a simple copper cup called a gas check to the bottom of the lead bullet will greatly reduce leading, as will the use of hard lead. Hard lead is an allow of lead and tin, or antimony, typically in 91$ lead, 10% alloy mix, the more alloy the harder the lead. 30% tin/antimony is when is typical, more than that and the lead becomes hard to work. Wheel weight lead is 90/10, and was the favorite of State Troopers back in the days when they had to feed there .357's out of their own pockets, it can still be found at tire shops and scrap yards.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Finding 'real' wheel weights or 'linotype' is getting harder to do. Half the tire shops have to turn them in and some are using zinc
