1931 Tula counter-bored

Post by miner49r »

Well, the 1931 Tula I purchased last week has been counter-bored. I never noticed until last night (that's the newbie in me) so now i'm curious the effect it will have as a shooter. The counter-bore is 1 1/2" deep and the rifling looks not so great,
This rifle was definitely used hard...
Will this rifle be a "straight shooter" or is it better served as a wall hanger?

Being counter bored is not a "Death Sentence" for a rifle, they tend to shoot pretty damn good. Those more knowledgeable will be along soon enough to put your concerns to rest.

Shoot it. I think it will surprise you! I have a few crunchy bores that shoot respectably. Just make sure its safe to shoot and good and clean.

The counter-bore is an improvement. It will shoot a lot better with it than if it hadn't been done.

Some of my best shooters are counterbored. And I have some that shoot well with rifling that looks fare worse. You may be surprised!

Counter bore means nothing. People who think it's a bad thing are misinformed.

I'll be shooting the gun as soon as the headspace has been checked. My OKIE gauges are in Chicago so they should make it to Canada soon. Maybe I'll be at the range on Christmas day!
I can't hardly wait to shoot my rifles and see how they perform.

Both my carbines (M38 and M44) are counter bored. Both are really good shooting rifles. Don't think twice about a counter bore. Just shoot and enjoy.

Counter bored or not it still has a story to tell. I bet you will be surprised after
you put some rounds down the pipe. Let us know how it does.

Counter boring was done to improve the accuracy lost from a worn muzzle.

Counter boring is an improvement, not a detriment.

I have a US Springfield M1 rifle made in Sept of '42. The last 3/16" of the barrel was "belled" from improper cleaning. The best it would do at 100 yards was hold the 8 ring on an SR1 target. I had the barrel counter bored for 3/16" to get rid of the "belling". It will now clean that same SR1 target at 100 yards. Sometimes counter boring is a good thing.

If it does not key hole, I would call it a shooter.

The rifles that will disappoint you are the ones that should have been counterbored and weren't! Only thing that may change is the muzzle velocity and with an inch of counter bore we could hardly measure the difference with a machine and there was no difference to the shooter when in use. I have a Chatellerault M91 that has 5+ inches of counter bore and it shoots great. Just like edging the grass when you cut it, it improves the look of a used bore! Bill
