Luxembourg FN-49 30-06

Post by Cj556 »

I always read about and wanted one of these while I was in high school. Only 6 thousand made for the Army of Luxembourg and marked AL on reciever. This one came from a relative who was a lifelong collector and decided to liquidate some of his collection my Sophmore year of college. I had the good fortune to acquire this and a refurb Tula 42 SVT-40 from him. This one is nice shape overall.

Yes, anything made for the army of Luxembourg would be made in small numbers, not exactly a huge country. Nice piece, the FN49's were the last of the old world crafted rifles. You would think from all the nicely milled steel parts that this was made in 1935, not post WW2.

With the freely available surplus weapons after WW2 I am surprised FN sold as many of these as they did to various nations.

Good salesmen, and some small countries didn't want to be too deep into Uncle Sams pockets.

A desirable piece, both few in numbers and in a readily available caliber.

The FN-49 actually was a 1930's product. Fabrique Nationale intuitively removed all blueprints, tooling and prototypes from the factory just before the Nazi invasion, and thankfully so. Had it been mass produced by the Germans, it would have been a formidable competitor to the M1 Garand.
No words of wisdom come to mind at this time....

As I understand it Saive was far away from the finished product in 1940 but his time in England allowed him to develop the rifle and it took some time. This is covered in the Collector Grade FN-49 book.

Very nice rifles.

I'm trying to acquire the FN-49s. I have an Century Egyptian 8mm. It is actually well made and functions flawlessly. It came with an original Military Echo mount and rings with a Russian VSOP Scope. I've been trying to get a Luxemburg, Colombian, and Venezuelan but they are not very easy to find outside of gunbroker where most are overpriced.

A very nice catch Cj and from the looks of things Manny needs to show what is attached to all those pointy things.

 I'll second that! The FN49 almost looks Steampunk in it's design....it is a hefty chunk of rifle.
