Mauser M24/47 feed issue

Post by timlin33 »

Went to the range last weekend and found that the round nose bullets (Winchester) would not feed. The nose would catch as the shell came up out of the magazine and actually gouge the lead bullet. Any ideas?

Try some military surplus 8mm, or reload to military spec. Sounds like the bullet is just too long for this weapon.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Just checked and the problem bullets are actually shorter than the military surplus I have (which feed fine). Obviously I'm not using the "bad" ones anymore but wondered why there was a problem in the first place.

If the bullet is too short to reach the feed ramp then the head will dive and catch. Military rifles were made and designed for a certain bullet type or weight and were used with the specific ammo. This is why there are updated rifles (mostly). Ammo was changed so sights needed changed to calibrate to the new ammo or you would have a bunch o bad shooting soldiers. The only other thing it could a been is a weak mag spring. If it is working fine with spritzer bullets then I would leave it alone and use that ammo.

Thanks for the info, makes sense. As for the white wine spitzers - not a big fan myself. Thanks again.

My Type 38 Carbine does the exact same thing with round nose soft points, but it feeds spitzer rounds just fine.
