M39 education

Post by ParrotHead »

I am going to be in the market for a M39 in a couple weeks.
I know this is probably a stupid question because it is usually personal preference based, but is there a specific variant
that most people tend to lean towards with regard to VKT/ Sako/ SK.Y?

:facepalm1:

1942 VKT M39 [1905]
1944 Tikka 91/30 [1915]
1940 Tikka M91 [1897]
1940 Tula [SA] 91/30
1935 Tula 91/30
1937 Tula 91/30
1928 5 line ex-Dragoon
1939 Izhevsk 91/30
1942 Izhevsk 91/30
1944 Izhevsk M44
Eddystone M1917 Enfield
1943 Shirley Enfield No 4 MK 1
1939 ERMA K98k

I think that the Sk.Y marked rifles are generally regarded as more desirable because they were originally Civil Guard issued rifles.

VKT and Sako were armories/manufacturers. I don't recall the respective production numbers off the top of my head, though Sako rifles seem to be more common.

Personally, I really like the SkY's--I like the SkY logo. I have two M39's--both VKT's. Only reason I bought the VKT was the price I paid for it...else, I prefer the SAKO logo over the VKT. I believe that a correct SkY M39 will have a Civil Guard logo on the stock with a date that matches the date on the barrel shank.

I would look for a "B" Barrel. They are generally in unissued condition. Look at as many as you can, which ever one blows your skirt up will be fine. You won't be happy until you have a selection of them anyway.

Don't forget the Tikka. It is harder to come by in an M39. And a SAKO with Polustuslaitos stamped on the barrel is a little tougher to come by as well. Or a 1945 SAKO is a little harder to get. :2cents:

No complaints with my '43 Sako. I can't think how it could be improved. Very consistent with all ammo, very smooth, very accurate.......SBP

I like the straight stocked m39s and I love the look and feel of my SK.Y in its straight stock.

I doubt you can go wrong with any m39 if you want a shooter.

Also remember you can get refurbished m39 that look brand new or original condition with almost no bluing and a few battle scars.

For your first M39 I wouldn't get too caught up in what type it is. Get something that appeals to you and make sure it has a very good+ bore. Finn rifles are known for their accuracy and there's still way too many M39s out there with excellent bores to bother with one that isn't that great if you're looking for something to shoot.
