Also got a Swedish M96

Post by 7x57 »

From the same seller I got my newly-acquired Enfield No. 4 Mk. 2 from also comes this 1915 M96 Swedish Mauser - regrettably only an arsenal rebuilt. But when you look at the pictures you'll understand why I had to buy it nevertheless.

Very nice rifle! :Drool1: Those Swedes are such nice rifles. I have several 96's in varying degrees of niceness.

You have a rifle to treasure. 98 years ago she rolled off the assembly line, into the hands of a crusty, fussy old inspector for a final look.

1915 seems to be a big year for Swedish M96s around here.

I don't understand the concern about it being a refurb. I think this rifle looks great. Still has history.
Just confused.
Congrats.

The Swedes could not afford to be trashing a rifle. So, they had a regular maintenance program. Both at the Arsenal and many different Arsenal and Military Workstations. By the looks of this one, it was over hauled and given a new barrel. It has a lot of metal that has the black dulite finish instead of a blue job. Receiver looks to be dulite. Barrel might also be. Cannot tell for certain. The Swedes considered this a new rifle! Plus, it obviously to me is one that went from overhaul into storage and never again reissued. I have a couple of Swedes this way and very accurate with the new barrels. The disk reads a bore of 6.49mm and condition is new as no numbers showing any wear/corrosion are stamped. This one is a real keeper no matter how you look at it.

Thanks, Gents! Actually I'm not really concerned that this rifle has been arsenal-rebuilt. But because of my inexperience with Swedish Mausers so far at first I thought this is a real untouched one which for whatever reason managed to "escape" any service for nearly 100 years. So of course I was a little bit disappointed (mostly about myself and my sloppy "homework") when I discovered the truth. I got a great rifle with that one for sure and for a really good price, too (just 300 Euros or about 380 US$).

A very good price. A couple of guys on another board have been paying around 400 Euros for their nice ones. I think you did very well for one in that condition!!!

A tiny grain of salt is the non-matching cleaning rod - but maybe I'll find one with the correct number one day...

Non matching cleaning rods are normal with Swedes. You'd have an easier time finding a unicorn or honest politician than a matching rod.

Thanks, gents. At the moment both the M96 and the Enfield are still at the seller - have to wait until March and April respectively before our laws allow me to pick them up. So be patient - more pictures will come for sure, but a little bit later...

That is a very nice L.I.R. Congrats!

I have a 1905 sitting within reach that I haven't gotten to the range yet and I am itching to try it out. If the rain will let off tomorrow, it's gonna happen.
