Interesting Remington Model 81

Post by Emdawg »

.35 Remington Woodmaster takedown. With.... a Krieger magazine conversion!

If any of you collect Remingtons, you know these are pretty uncommon.

Lousy lighting with the pictures, so they are a little fuzzy.

Nice one. She's in great shape, too. I got a Model 8 in 30 rimless that's in decent shape, but it's near impossible to find ammo for, lol.

That is very cool. What is the deal on the mag conversion? Did it originally not have a removable mag?
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

The original Model 8s and 81s had a fixed, 5-round magazine. Mine is a Krieger Conversion done by Krieger & Sons in Michigan. They had the most successful detachable magazine design and finding one of these rifles is pretty hard. I was amazed when I saw it.

The only other major conversion was the Police models with the 15-round magazines during Prohibition. They needed a car stopper that could compete with the BAR and Thommy guns, but slightly more controllable.

I have a Model 81 in pretty nice condition, in 300 Savage. I'm thinking I will get more of them. Really interesting rifles.
