What does the R stand for after the date stamping on my mosin hex shape breech.Same R is shown at end of ammo,"54R"

The r after the year on a Mosin Nagant means "Year" and the R after 7.62x54R stands for "Rimmed" as in rimmed cartridge.

For the ammo the "r" stands for rimmed and the "r" after the date is short for "god" or "year" in Russian.

Thanks very much. A salesman at Gander Mountain was SURE it stood for Russia!
