I use Sellier & Bellot 180gr softpoints for hunting. It worked for me. The proof is in the pudding: http://www.russian-mosin-nagant-forum.c ... 16&t=23007 My most satisfactory kill.

By the way, I have one of those cheap scout scopes and a mount that adapts to the rear sight base and holds the scope just in front of the receiver with a 9 inch eye relief. The strait bolt clears it just fine if you want to use that for an economic hunting solution. I measured the distance between where I put my eye and the front of the receiver to see how much relief I'd need. Got one of those AIM 2-7x32 scopes with 8"-10" eye relief for about $35. I did that on a carbine to shoot bowling pins without permanently altering the rifle. But like the others have said, try it out with iron sights first. I've killed several deer with just the iron sights.
