1945 Izhevsk M38 Verification

Post by Beeps905 »

How can I verify the year and make of my M38? There are a lot of numbers stamped on it and I want to make sure I'm not misrepresenting what it is when I sell it. I posted pics on this site a few years ago and was told it was a 1945 Izhevsk M38 with a laminated M44 stock. I can send pics again or you can probably find them in my previous posts. Thank you for your time.

Thank you! I read that the 1945 is more difficult to find than other years, so I figured it was too good to be true that it was actually a 1945. The year stamp isn't very good, but now that you pointed it out I can see a faint 1945 on the rifle.

Best bet is to check the tang date. A lot of 43 dated mosins, m38s included, have poorly struck dates that make the numbers resemble 1945 instead. In45 dated mosins tend to have very nicely struck dates in my observation.

I didn't locate any numbers on the tang, but thank you for the advice. Two members previously indicated it is a 1945 based upon the pictures I've posted, so I'm going to go with that unless proven differently. I just didn't want to falsely advertise something.

Underside of the tang, you have to remove the action from the wood and flip it over. If you found the date on the barrel then you already know it's a 1945. Sometimes the Soviets reused older receivers, or leftovers from the previous year. The tang date, if it's there, would tell you that.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

If the underside of the tang isn't marked, try going over the date with a white crayon lightly.

That one appears to be a 1943 date

Could be. Has he posted the tang date yet?

Nice one. Be careful, they can be addictive. I have one for each year and a Tula factory also and they are in the correct stock for the year. Once you start, you can't stop. I would post a photo but I don't know how. Being a 1945, that laminated 1944 stock can certainly be the correct stock for that year.

Only real rare M38's are the 1940 Tula.
And, any Finn captured M38's
