FN 9x19 Ammo 1951

Post by tjtM38 »

Has anybody ever seen any of this surplus ammo? Fabrique Nationale 9mm with crimped primers, cupro-nickel jacket and year stamp 1951. I am assuming this to be corrosive primers and possibly sub machine gun ammo. My local gun shop has a ton of this. Any help or experience appreciated.

I would also assume it's corrosive. Regardless it's cool, and depending on price might be fun for plinking with.

I probably won't buy a lot of this because it's just too old. There is a reason that military forces sell off surplus ammo when they determine it is too old and unreliable. The cost was $12 for two boxes of 25 rounds each. It does say "Oxyless" on the side of the box over an FN symbol, and I understand that means non-mercuric or non corrosive primers. I am inclined to treat all surplus ammo as corrosive.

I am not so sure your surplussing theory works with the US military. I think they surplus stuff when a vendor needs a new contract.

This ammo had very hard primers and would not fire in my Glock 19. I assume it is machine gun ammo or the primers have gone bad. The dealer I bought this from exchanged it for a fresh box of Federal 9x19.

Non corrosive primers don't hold up like the corrosive stuff. If these don't reliably go bang, I would assume that was the issue.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

French surplus ammo is notorious for dead primers for that reason. All the surplus Lebel rifle ammo is basically components only. Buy it for the bullet and case, cause it’s not likely to go bang.

I would buy it for it’s cool “value” only
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Some stuff I will buy for components, particularly AP or other bullets. I've got a bunch of German 7.92x57 that came with the "I" bore rifles I got. Seen a couple of WWI date headstamps on the brass. Cupro nickel jackets and pulled one bullet to check it out-they even stamped the base of the lead core with a letter stamp.
