Reloading for the Mosin Nagant

Did a little load development today for the first time with LAPUA brass, 180 gr soft points, Fed 210 primers and Varget. Went quite well and learned it definitely makes a difference on where you positioned your front bag.

Just wondering with the twist of the Mosin, what make and weight of bullets does it like? With what powders?

I think this depends on the rifle to some degree. I have one rifle that likes heavy bullets, so I worked up a load with Hornady's 174gr round nose (#3130) using Fed 210 primers, PPU brass and 42 grains of IMR 4895.

This is a good load across most of my Mosins as well and is what my PU and m28//30 likes the best, +/- a few 1/10ths of a grain.

My '44 Izhevsk PU shoots best with 150gr .311" PPU SPBT bullets with Ramshot Big Game behind them, cases are PPU.

Incidentally the same load is also the most accurate in my SVD which is handy.It shoots to the same point of aim as Russian military light ball but with much better accuracy and consistency.It is handy that it shoots the same as it allows the BDC turret settings on my PSO-1 to still correspond to the correct range.

I use 150 gr .312 diameter bullets with either H or IMR 4895. The charge escapes me at the moment. This loading in either my '28 or '43 Izhevsks will clean an SR1 target at 100 yds. I've shot the '43 at 600 yd matches a few times. Out of a possible 500, it will shoot in the mid-to-high 200's, on par with my 03-A3. The problem lies not with either rifle, but with 64 yo eyes trying to use iron sights designed for 20 yo eyes.

I've had great luck with 168 gr hpbt bullets, H4895 powder but I shoot them in my M39. They are .308" bullets, and I haven't shot them in my 91/30 but .311 150 gr does fine in the 91/30's. For plinking fun with less recoil I like the .311 185 gr cast bullets loaded with Red Dot powder.
