7.62X54R reloading info.

Post by Gene S »

This is my current load for this round that is for my Russian M44.

Privi Partizan brass.
CCI large rifle primers.
Hodgson H414 49.5gr.
Speer Hotcore .311 180gr. JSP-RN.
Or.
Hornady .312 174gr. Interloc JSP-RN.

I originally used the load data from Lee that came with my die set which indicated a 47gr. Charge of H414 but started also with Winchester LR Magnum primers & was getting good shots but low POI.
This load that I currently have seem to duplicate the POI of the Brown Bear 174gr. Out to 100 yards.

How is the accuracy. I want to start reloading for my M38 and T53 which are essentially similar to the M44. Primarily will be looking for something that's accurate out to about 300 yards as I would love to take a Mule Deer or Elk with one of my old war horses

I've found that my M44 favors 174-180 grain factory loadings like S&B & Barnaul.
My loading duplicates those factory loadings & I get an average of 2-2.5" group at least 100 yards with it through my rifle.

Can surplus shells be reloaded? I was told at cabelas that if there was 2 holes inside that it couldnt be reloaded. Only if it had 1 discharge hole could be. I am new to reloading so i am seaking advice. Thanks.

Surplus is Berdan primed AND steel cased. Either of those would deter me, both of them, just not worth the time or effort. You can get some good PPU brass for a reasonable price, or just buy a couple hundred factory loaded PPU rounds and reload them after you shoot them.

I agree with Lotema, surplus ammo isn't Orth the trouble of graying to reload.
PPU brass can be had for about $50.00 for 100 rounds if you look.

Kari Prager reload information:
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=192

Hogden H380 powder 50 grains
Sierra .311 DIA. 303 cal 150 GR. Spitzer

"I gave you was a very conservative load, and you could almost certainly go up to 50 grains and throw 25 grains twice. That is still a conservative load with .308 bullets in a bigger bore diameter, bumping the bullet size up to .311 will raise pressures a little bit but not so as you have to worry. You should see a velocity of around 2550 fps, which is a good velocity for accuracy. anything around 2600 fps tends to be pretty good"

"The maximum load for 150 gr. Sierras in .308 is 54.3 gr.,and a generally recommended rule of thumb is to start about 10% below that and work up"

"I've had good luck with slightly heavier charges and .311 Sierra or .312 bullets."

"If you wanted to shoot at an excellent velocity for accuracy as a rule you could load your .311 Sierras with 50.5 gr. for an honest 2600 FPS. This load is right on the money for target shooting, and I think you would get good results.Of course every rifle is different."

Hornady is the ONLY loading manual that distinguishes between .308 and .312 bullets and loads.

I use this all the time on my reloads. Kari helped get me started years ago. Best loading info I have found so far for me. But re-loading is just like "how do you clean your rifle" posts. Millions of ways to do the same thing!! :chuckles:
