1931 Izhevsk Dragoon, SCW
1931 Izhevsk Dragoon, SCW
Here we go with some pics of a dragoon I recently acquired, pics up to my usual abysmal level of proficiency, alas.
Late period bands.
There were a couple of little surprises. When I took the handguard off, two pieces of what look like old, dessicated leather fell out:
Then came the mark inside the stock (nothing under the butt plate though):
Followed by the cryptic stamping:
And the more conventional tang date:
The usual faded cartouches:
Not counterbored . . .
. . . in fact, an almost new bore!
. . . and cleaning rod.

Pics are plenty good enough. That one is in great shape for an SCW.
No words of wisdom come to mind at this time....
Re: 1931 Izhevsk Dragoon, SCW
Thankee, but with my crappy little camera, I never seem to get a really good shot of the entire rifle.martin08 wrote:Pics are plenty good enough. That one is in great shape for an SCW.

Really nice Dragoon. Don't see to many SCW dragoons compared to Finns.
That seller had a couple of nice ones.

Always take the pics outside if possible. Look how richer the colour of the stock is compared to the inside pics.

Interesting, as most of mine are Finn marked.qz2026 wrote:Real beauty this one is Congrats!!

Where did I get the idea that SCW's were all 1936-1937, with the possibility of a 1938?

I'm not an expert but I think the Russians dedicated much of their 36/37 production to Spain. But, they sent all kinds of stuff other than the new rifles. Basically what they could spare and didn't want any more... But, most of what I have seen appeared to have been refurbished prior to sending.
Re: 1931 Izhevsk Dragoon, SCW
I seem to recall JYD saying that early on Stalin didn't take the SCW quite so seriously and sent along whatever odds and ends were available. Lapin writes about the Leftist government of Mexico shipping older Mosins to the "Republicans," as well. Later, Stalin got more serious and apparently sent a lot of 1936 and some 1937 rifles. He always seemed to be behind the curve on military matters.NLMosin wrote:Where did I get the idea that SCW's were all 1936-1937, with the possibility of a 1938?
I have other dragoons that came out of Spain and so are at least arguably SCW, as well as a 1934 Izhevsk M91/30 stamped "MADE IN USSR." The rest are 1936 and 1936/37s with Spanish hangers or other indicia.
MillerTyme is the big SCW collector here, I believe, and could probably speak to all of this, too.

Didn't the US send Mosins via Mexico to keep them from knowing the US was helping.

I have no doubt that whoever underwrote "The Abraham Lincoln Brigade," sent other aid as well. The radical Left was way more overtly militant back then when they were all about, "the armed struggle against the capitalist oppressors." Listening to some of these old Reds being interviewed (you can find them on YouTube) is quite revealing. Today, they wage war through "democratic means," control of the media, and the indifference of the mass of the citizenry.Lee-online wrote:Didn't the US send Mosins via Mexico to keep them from knowing the US was helping.

This is a very cool rifle, and very hard to find.

Re: 1931 Izhevsk Dragoon, SCW
Thank you. Any thoughts as to whether "dice marks" constitute an SCW marking? I've heard this mentioned. The pic is from a 1917 PTG in an American stock. The rifle has no other indicators that it is SCW that I can see.

It is listed as a mark some SCW rifles have been found with, but nothing concrete. From what I can see if does look to be SCW by both what you see, and what you don't see ( Finn & Balkan traits)

I put some pics of that rifle up in a separate thread.Miller Tyme wrote:It is listed as a mark some SCW rifles have been found with, but nothing concrete. From what I can see if does look to be SCW by both what you see, and what you don't see ( Finn & Balkan traits)
