Khyber Pass 303?

Post by vblue42 »

I know it's likely hard to tell by these picks but can any of tell if this is a khyber pass rifle? I will be meeting this person to marrow and taking more detailed pics to submit here. What should I look for?

No way to tell from that. Check for backwards letters and misspelled words no import mark and rough blue and machining

Look for an incorrect royal seal. That #4mk1 should not have a VR (Victoria Regina)(Queen Victoria) on it. Also the crudity of the markings.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I bought one several years ago and the only telltale marking was a VR, Queen Victoria, stamp on a 1918 stamped rifle. She Died in 1901. What makes you think this one is a Khyber Pass rifle?

The rifle in these pics is a No4 Mk1. I concur with looking for legible markings. It should read No4 Mk1 on the left side of the receiver , possibly with an FTR date. It could be marked FAZ, Longbranch, or even Savage. Serial numbers should be on the receiver (or wrist) and on the back of the bolt handle. Magazine will likely be marked as well, but a non matching mag is not that uncommon. From what I can see in the pics it looks legit. Flip sight on the rear tends to indicate it is an earlier gun. In any event Khyber pass rifles are more commonly No1's , not No 4's..... You posted before I could finish typing. What you have is a 1942 dated BSA No4 Mk1. BSA is Birmingham Small Arms .

If it is a 1917, why is it dated 1942?

I will add as well that the stock looks to be in really nice condition. A great many of these saw alot of use and can be rough.

Will you be able to look at it prior to committing ? I dont see anything wrong with it from the pics, aside from the missing magazine. It is likely that they just dont know what they have..

I'm actually not interested in it. I just warned him that he might have an unsafe rifle and agreed to meet with him and look it over. That's why I created this thread because I don't know what to look for and really don't know anything about 303s. For the money however I might have bought it if I hadn't just bought a 1903A3 yesterday.

If you are going to look over a rifle you know nothing about how can you even think you are doing him justice? Do you have the proper gauges?

According to the serial number this rifle should be a maltby made rifle. Not sure why it doesn't have any letters before the number. I am suspicious of the serial to say the least. If it was a bsa the serial should start with a 3. The finish of the collar is not consistant with any no4 that I have seen. There wont be a vr gr er mark on it or shouldn't be. The wartime no4s were coded (kind of) to hide production form the enemy

I edited some of it so it may help out. I am not sure of the value unless better fotos are taken. Kybers have value as well as regular but not sure as to shooting them.
