1946 Izhevsk M44: Unissued Condition.

Today I aquired this very nice '46 Izhevsk M44 in unissued condition. It is all serial matching but does have an elctro penciled matching number on the bolt. Below are quick pics with detailed disassembly pics to follow. Enjoy and if any of you see anything of interesting let me know.

100% refurb. But post war m44s are fairly low production

Yeah its got an electro penciled serial on the bolt so no doubt about uts a refurb. I am curious though as to why the bolt needed to be replaced on such a late a post war rifle. Also everything else appears to be original. I wonder if the original bolt was somehow lost. Like the soldier removed the bolt and placed it on the rail of a bridge he was standing on and accidently knock it off into the river or something. Anyway, detailed field strip pics are next.

The EP number makes me think it's one of the earlier Mosin imports from Romania. I acquired a similar M44 back in the 90's, but mine has stamped numbers. I suspect the Romanians got some military aid from the USSR, and didn't issue all of it.

I was just looking it over again now that I am home and I am really impressed at the quality of the metal finish and blueing on the barrel and receiver.

Just curious, who was the importer. This may tell a story also. The finish on the wood and metal both are very nice.

It is one of their imports from 20+ years back. These are the rifles that came in wrapped in heavy paper tied with string.

Ya know guys, the more I look at the rifle the more I'm starting to believe it may not be refurbed. There are no refurb marks I could find on the rifle. And the bolt is absolutely brand new with a high gloss in areas that don't make contact. This and the electro penciled serial lead me to believe the bolt was replaced with a new one due to something happening to the original bolt. Also, from what I've seen when the Russians did their mass refurb operations they rarely stamped or penciled the cirylic letters on the bolts to save time I would assume. The fact that this one has the letters penciled indicates to me this was done at a time when there was more time outside of a mass refurb operation. Just some things I've put together in my head. What do you guys think.

Stock has been sanded as the original buttstock marks have been mostly removed. Handguard has a crack in it that's been repaired with three dowels "cross stitches" which is very Romanian trait. The buttplate has been ground/sanded in the area of the old S/N and renumbered with matching SN that has different font. It does look to be un-reissued and it's a very old import
