Soon To Be M1 Garand Owner

Post by vblue42 »

Today I did something I never though I would do. I completed a pleasant journey I never intended or thought I would ever embark. This journey was kind of interesting. Over the last week or so Ive been shopping for a 1903A3. Ive come across several but they were all in the 850-1000+ and I just don't have that kind of money. Its unfortunate but I got into this military surplus rifle collecting game a little late now that the prices are soaring. Anyway, while searching for 1903s I came across the CMP website and was disappointed to see they no longer had any 1903s. While on the site I stumbled on to the Garand section and was surprised to see service grade rifles selling for 625.00 plus shipping straight to my door. This got me thinking: you know, this is the most famous rifle in the world and the rifle that won the second World War. "The finest battle implement ever devised," and I can afford it. At that point I was sold. Today I sent off my paper work for my first ever M1 Garand. It will be 4-6 months before I see her but I will update this thread when she arrives. :ani-pop:

You will absolutely love it. They're a marvel of machinery. Wait until the first time you shoot it with someone that's never shot one and see the look on their face when the enbloc pops out. Classic.

I don't think the wait will be that long. You will be shooting her yet this summer. Glad to see you found the CMP. They are the best place to buy and M1.

If you are looking for a shooter springfield be on the look out for a 03A3. They usually a little cheaper that a 1903 plus they have the rear peep sight.

I have an 03 in the family. It was my fathers and was handed down to my oldest brother. I got from him for a range trip a few months ago and was hoping he would forget. He didn't and I had to give it back. I decided to just try and buy my own in an 03A3 but wasn't able to find one at the right price and they aint join down. Anyway, I have access to an 03 when I want so this M1 is perfect. My father, (a Korean War vet) always dreamed of owning an M1 after he left the Army but was never able to get his hands on one. He is now passed and I feel I am living his dream by making this purchase. I know he's watching.

You'll love your Garand once it arrives, kind of odd getting the shells all together in the clip but it gets easier. You can also pick up 2 and 5 shot clips for this rifle.
Being in Mississippi you might not be far from the south store in Alabama I think where you can pick out your own rifle. Living in West Virginia I made the 10 hour round trip last July and picked out a 1954 H&R special. Everything I could find local was in the area of $800 and up and pretty rough. For another $150 I picked the special that's correct and like new. Very accurate rifles, you'll be shocked once you try it out.

I did contact the store in Anniston which is also 10 hours round trip from me. Unfortunately they only have rack, field and special grade available. I can't quite swallow 995.00 for a special grade and I wanted a better condition then rack or field grade. I would have loved to travel to hand pick a service grade.

Thats good to here dou. I am curious, did your service grade come with a new stock? Many of the CMP service grades on YouTube have new stocks. Also, can you please link me to your thread? Thanks.

I almost got tears in my eyes! Congrats on fulfilling my dream. You have time to get the book on these and learn all about them. The book is expensive but worth it. I can't remember the name at the moment but JYD can tel you.

Very good movie clip JYD, hope to watch the whole movie soon. I sold several things and my young son and I started a M1 fund to buy ours, rifle, bayonet and 400 rounds of ammo was right at $1,200.oo
Crazy how high anything German or American military related costs but I wanted one to share with my dad while he's still around to tell stories.
Here's my H&R correct grade CMP Special 1954. The white shown in the picture is Lithium grease, they seem to be unused so things are pretty tight. I asked my dad about him keeping them lubed and he said only after showering with them.
