M24/47 Or M48?

Hi folks, on Friday I will be purchasing my first Mauser. The only issue I'm having is deciding on wether to get a 24/47 or an M48. The price is right on either and condition is very good to excelant on either. Right now I'm thinking I am leaning towards the 24/47 simply because of the potential for being more historic in the sense that these rifles outfitted a newly formed nation after WW1 and some may have seen actuall combat. The M48s from what I can gather were nearly all produced post war. My question to you folks is: if it were you which would you pick and why?

M24/47, because I have one and I like it. Otherwise the basic answer to these sort of questions is just get both

I would opt for the M48 or M48A because they will usually have less wear on them and shoot better. They were made on ex-Nazi equipment by a struggling country just trying to make ends meet after the war. Is that not history. Many of the 24/47's are worn out and although they look pristine externally they are well worn. Again this would be decided with a good inspection and by what is there to pick from. As of late I have seen quite a few nice looking 24/47's with pristine bores showing very little wear. I would say the best open and old time iron sight weapon I own is a $139 M48A. It came for that price with all the accoutrements included and looks brand new for all intents and purposes. I would go for the 24/47. Have not seen many like Bill mentions. I have had a few and they are in fantastic condition even when unrefurbed. These also had new barrels put on in 47 and after as the nomenclature suggests. Some saw action in the Balkans and Yugo wars and have graffiti and such, which only adds to them in my mind. Of course you can find worn out rifles of both kind and the m48s also saw some unofficial action in the same places as the 47. Get one -----then the other later.

Maybe I should have mentioned these are internet purchases so I don't have the option to inspect one before I buy. There are none to be had locally where I live.

This won't help, but I can't think of a reason you could go wrong with either.

Internet buys then I may lean to m48. But I did buy a m24/47 from big 5 and it was real nice. I looked at 4 or 5 though.

I will be buying the 24/47 from Samco and the M48 from Windeners depending on which one I get.

Have done business with samco and had a good experience. Have not done any with wideners.

I would lean to the M48 if it is a M48 with all milled parts. Superb Mausers.

The M24/47's are nice, but I prefer a bent bolt.




I were the OP, I would save and get a nice Yugo K98.

I have an offer for an M48A that I talked the guy down to 320.00 shipped but I really don't want a rifle with stamped parts if I can get one with all milled and Wideners has all milled for 269.99. I also have an opportunity to get an M24/47 with a bent bolt handle.

I own both rifles. I got my M24/47 from Samco and my M48 from SOG. I don't see how you can go wrong with either or both

I bought my M48 from Wideners a few weeks ago. It is in excellent condition, the bore is bright and the stock looks great. I wasn't covered in cosmoline but it did have it in the action and bore. Took about an hour to clean it out. The stock was not covered in it, which made it much easier. I chose the M48 simply because a friend had ordered one from Wideners an it too was in really good shape. So far so good with it. Love it. The only dings it had were on the front nose cap. It has been hammered on. Not too bad, but it was scratched up a bit. other than that, it looks good. Not in unissued condition, and all numbers matched except the stock. I am very happy with it. A 24/47 will be joining the M48 soon.

I have one of the scrubbed Yugo M48's that came in back in the late 1980's. Because of the lack of markings it not until I bought the Mauser book several years later that I was able to ID it. This is an issued rifle, not the pretty M48's you see offered today. My M24/47 is a better looking rifle.
