Headspace gauges

Post by ahamay79 »

I need some expert advice. My "new" 1932 Izhevsk hex has failed the "no-go" gauge test, but passed the "field" gauge test. Should I have any concerns?

I'd try a different bolt head to try and get it back to where it fails the No-go as well. The Field gauge was intended to measure the maximum clearance for the rifle to be useable in a wartime environment. Just my :2cents:

Go to the Okie Headspace gauge site at the top of the page for some good information. He says a firearm that passes the Field gauge test should be safe to fire with milspec ammo.

Oh yeah, I have another 91/30 coming in a week or so, so I'll probably swap bolt heads and check them both then.

Liberty tree collectors has bolt heads, the bolt head swaps in 10 seconds or less, this fixed all the headspace issues I have ever had on a Mosin. Bolt heads are not expensive and one will probably do the job.

Well that was quick and easy enough. Happy shooting. Amazing that the difference between a no-go and field guage is a measurement of. 004" if I'm not mistaken.

Field test is what an armorer would have used for a gun in the field to be safe to fire, hence the name. I use a go or no go set of guages only just to be real sure. I have a field guage but it resides in the table drawer and never comes out of there. Just a personal choice on that and I too change only the bolt heads for adjustment. Too easy to do rather than mess with other ways. Bill :)

.003" actually, or about the same as the thickness of a sheet of copy paper. :beek:

Can't remember if you said you had others or others were coming. Just for S&G's, try the old bolt head on the other bolts and test them with the NG gauge and see what happens.

I do have another 91/30 coming next week. I'm going to check it as is, and then swap my old bolt head with it's bolt head and see if it passes, also.
