True. And I usually hear about it or see it on the news and shake my head.

But if Cabela's runs a special on Mosins, I'll be there.

Otherwise, I'm going to the range.

Mosin Nagants are NOT Ugly

I have read and heard (on YouTube) the Mosin Nagant rifle described as ugly. I profoundly disagree. If you want to see ugly, go to any range and look at the various "black rifles" that military historian and commentator Gwynne Dyer correctly describes as, "Ugly. Utilitarian. Ruthless....

Re: Modern rounds/Old Mosin

Thank you, both, for your answers. No Finnish markings. The rifle is surprisingly "clean."

Modern rounds/Old Mosin

Before I blow my foolish head off . . . I recently acquired an Izhevsk Mosin Nagant dated 1923 on the receiver. The date on the bottom of the tang is, however, 1895. I was not entirely surprised to see this as there is what appears to be a defaced Imperial eagle on the top flat of the receiver (beca...

Re: Tulas at Cabelas

If there was Veteran's Day special it was a well-kept secret at the Hamburg, PA store. But I'm really not complaining. With one exception, the sales staff has always treated me well. I wish that the rifles were in better shape, though . . . Nothing caught my eye, today. I dropped by Gander Mountain....

The Wide Variety of Stains

Does anyone know the history behind the wide variety of stains that one sees on Mosins? I realize this likely had to do with where the rifle was refurbished, but I find it amazing that there are so many variations. Generally, there seems to be: 1. Reddish-brown with a hint of yellow (I suspect that'...

Re: My son struck out at Cabelas

My other issue is condition. Why are Cabela's Mosins so banged up? I haven't seen this anywhere else. The stocks look like about 20 rifles were put in a 50 gallon drum and rolled down a hill. EXCACTLY: There were "about" 30 M91/30's, all priced at $199.95 :big shock: , ALL in crap/parts c...

Re: My son struck out at Cabelas

I've had mixed experiences at Cabela's. Some of the sales folk are extraordinarily helpful, but one jerk actually told me they had none in back. I just found another sales guy, and of course, they did. My other issue is condition. Why are Cabela's Mosins so banged up? I haven't seen this anywhere el...

Re: New Members, Make your first post here!

With the weekend at hand, I'll see if I can put some up. The odd thing with the Tula is that I got it at Cabela's. Of the forty or so on the racks, all were Izhevsks except one very battered 1939 Tula with some serious corrosion issues. So I asked a gentleman for a Tula (explaining what it was and w...

Re: New Members, Make your first post here!

I suppose that it was inevitable that I would start buying Mosins given my life-long interest in the Russian military. At my advanced age, I can indulge myself a bit.

Oh. I have a 1927 Tula and a 1929 Izhevsk.
