I can't get a clear picture of it but when I lifted the rear site I found a small star stamped into the metal below. Can anyone tell me what that might be?

It's the rear sight leaf spring and yours came from the Tula (small star) arsenal.

You have a Remington bolt and screwed in escutcheons, which is pretty cool. Post a pic like Pacanis recommends and then we can tell if it's an ex-dragoon or not.

I had one refurb that was caked in cosmoline, but the others were relatively dry.

I agree with pacanis. Keep the showcase free of responses. Those can be included in a different thread. I like martin's idea of a separate board for the real unusual and rare collectable mosin's.
