Re: Manufacturing Specifications for 7.62x54R Mosin Nagants

I guess the best I can hope for would be to find the specifications the Russians would have supplied the U.S. when they contracted us to manufacture the 91-30 Mosin Nagant rifles for them. I am not sure how to find this information. Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Manufacturing Specifications for 7.62x54R Mosin Nagants

Except for the fact that rifling isn't done with a drill bit, so I just don't know. At least now I am back to my original thought that I don't want to bore scope my rifles for corrosion, and I don't really want to slug them either. If I have a problem that shows up on the paper at 100 yards, then I...

Re: Manufacturing Specifications for 7.62x54R Mosin Nagants

I think I understand where you guys are coming from with your ideas. By nature, I am the type of person that is investigative and asks questions while looking for answers based on facts. That is why I would like to know what specifications were used to produce the Mosin Nagants. Of interest would be...

Manufacturing Specifications for 7.62x54R Mosin Nagants

Has anyone studied the manufacturing of the barrels for the various Mosin Nagant rifles? I ask this because there are so many of these rifles with what appears to be oversized bores. I have Russian and Polish examples with groove diameters running from .313” to .315”. The only information I have bee...

Re: Model 44 Mosin Nagant Cleaning Project

As for counter boring, whenever possible I prefer a rifle I add to my collection to be as close to original as possible. If the rifle is just a shooter then the counter bored rifle may be more accurate than an original with a little rod wear. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised about the larger ...

Re: Model 44 Mosin Nagant Cleaning Project

Today I finished cleaning the bore when the patches started coming out more gray than black. The bore is quite evenly frosted and rifling is fairly strong. I sluged the bore using one of my special LBT molds that casts a .315" diameter bullet. The bullet nose is .309" diameter. It took 3.0...

Model 44 Mosin Nagant Cleaning Project

2-1/2 years ago I purchased a Model 44 Mosin Nagant manufactured by Tula in 1944. Being a bit on the rare side I jumped at the chance of owning one. The sellers pictures were enough to confirm what the rifle was and exterior was in good or better condition. The barrel was counter bored and the bore ...

Re: Do you like clean brass?

I always clean my brass. I can not run dirty brass through good sizing dies, knowing dirty brass is harmful to the surface finish inside the die and in turn the brass. I prefer to be kind to my dies and brass, They both last much longer when the brass is clean.

Sorry about the lack of pictures. I am just recovering from a computer crash and restoration is slow due to all the preparation for the white season here in Minnesota. I will post so pictures as soon as I am able.

Lucky Me - Found A Tula M44 and 1891/59

Lucky Me - Found A Tula M44 and 1891/59. Now I will appreciate any additional information forum members can provide about these two rifles. The Tula model 44, dated 1944 , has the Tula star, year date and serial number on the barrel. There is a refurb mark also. Close inspection indicates the refurb...

Re: Excessive Expansion Above Cartidge Base

Great information. I have eight 303 British caliber rifles, No.1 MK 3's, No. 4 MK 1's and No. 4 MK 2's and over a dozen 7.62x54R's. I find the 303 British to be the hardest on brass, even when compared to my dozen or more 7.62x54R rifles. So, me being picky about wear and tear on my brass and just a...

Excessive Expansion Above Cartidge Base

For those interested in reloading many of the metric calibers. Some shooters have reported a noticable ring on their fired brass that looks to be excessive and in a number of cases, it is. My first experence with this problem was with my 6.5 x 55 Swede. I found the Yugo ammo measures .477" abov...

My Latest Find

Last Friday I went to a gun show and one of the dealers that usually has Mosin Nagant rifles had a really nice 1891/59 on his table in addition to a model 38. The model 38 wasn't very nice and that is why the dealer hadn't called me. He has been looking for a nice 38 for me. The 1891/59 went home wi...

Re: T53 from SOG arrived

Maybe I should consider one. Reports of poor bores and general condition has had me scared of what I may receive.

Still hoping to see one at a gun show that I can check out before buying.

Re: Years of Production for the Polish M44

A person that lives in Germany researched the Polish M44 and with over (800) rifles in his data base only the years of 1951 to 1955 have been observed. That pretty much locks in Polish M44 production from 1951 to 1955. If rifles are ever found outside that range, they are indeed odd balls and probab...

Extractor - Too Strong A Spring

Can the tension of the extractor be reduced? I have seven 91-30's, three M44's and one M38. One of the M44's is a Polish in unissued condition and it is the only one of all the Mosin Nagants that the bolt closes quite easily on a round being loaded into the chamber. The extractor snaps over the rim ...

Polish M44 Carbine Production Question Answered

With help from a member of the "Gunboards Forum", I now know the answer. Polish M44 Carbines were manufactured from 1951 to 1955. Of hundres of Polish M44's observed, all were within the 1951 to 1955 year dates. If any other year date exists, it hasn't shown up in the study and likely is n...

Re: Need Help - Polish M44 Year Dates

I will be updating the reply with the numbers of Polish M44 carbines by year date as more information comes in. As of now, I have a total of (33) Polish M44 Carbines with the year documented with pictures. Of that 33 M44's, (20) are 1952. The earliest is a 1951 and the latest are 1955 dated. Granted...

Re: Need Help - Polish M44 Year Dates

I appreciate all the help I can get. Keep the data coming. I searched some auctions and found one Polish M44 listed as a 1958 but the picture clearly show the date to be 1953. So far I have found 1 - 1951, 20 - 1952's, 7 - 1953's, 2 - 1954's and 3 - 1955's. These are all clearly dated in the picture...

Need Help - Polish M44 Year Dates

I need the help of forum members to determine how many year dates can be found on the Polish M44 carbines. These M44 carbines have the oval with the number "11" in it. With little to no feed back in my original request as to what years Poland manufactured the M44, I am thinking another app...
