Re: First Shotgun Hog Kill

I'm a habitual maintainer of firearms, so I will never get to the point where I test its functional limits, but other people have told me that that you can use them for everything up to and including a canoe paddle and still expect them to function. I've been out with the 500/28 inch now and the Mav...

First Shotgun Hog Kill

I have never hunted with a shotgun. I've always chosen times and places where a rifle was legal and in some cases (Africa) where it was really the only option. I wanted to take advantage of some Florida WMA options that would require a shotgun, but I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the kind of cabbage ...

91-59 my Daughters call Blondie. By far the most accurate Mosin Carbine in my gun cabinet.

Re: I bought a Cartoon Gun

I actually shot several different factory loads through it that day and didn't find the recoil uncomfortable on any of them. Those were 405 Remington, but I had some loose 430 Buffalo Bore and a bunch of the 325 LeverMax and they all felt reasonable. I'll have to load to keep the cost down, but it's...

Re: I bought a Cartoon Gun

https://youtu.be/u3UG9I7ecLQ Here's me shooting it. At this range it's still going up, but I can't see holes in paper like I used to... In two weeks I'll be out in farm country where I can shoot 50 yards at a plate. That seems like about the right range to start. If I can get an inch high there I sh...

Re: I bought a Cartoon Gun

I was shocked by how manageable the the recoil turned out to be. It's been 20 years since I flinched firing a handgun, but I had myself all worked up for nothing. OK, maybe not nothing, but a Ruger Alaskan in .44 kicks much worse. Now I have to start reloading 45-70 or I could end up with a permanen...

I bought a Cartoon Gun

I finally broke down and matched calibers with two of my rifles, one from each end of the spectrum. The .22 is fun to shoot, but the 45-70 is literally a blast!

Now I can protect the homestead from either sedentary squirrels or pterodactyls...

Re: Bolt sticks after 4th round every time,

I had the same issue with a 91-59, someone on here suggested a soft brass shotgun bore brush and a drill. I stayed in denial for two more trips to the range, thinking "I know how to clean a rifle, it must be mechanical"... Finally I used the brush with some solvent for about 20 seconds...n...

The Mosins just creep in...

In the last 3 months I’ve bought a Winchester 88 .308 lever action, a BFR Revolver in 45-70 GVT and the companion 45-70 single shot Handi Rifle. They’re all a lot of fun to shoot, but as I’m loading up the truck to run up to my Brother’s farm tomorrow, somehow my M44 and a .22lr revolver managed to ...

Re: My M59

I always figure the donor barrels for the 59's are better than your average wartime. Even if it saw some hard use as a 91/30, the cut down and re-crown cleans them up nicely.

Love that blonde stock!

Re: while shooting '41 VKT

I had to laugh about the AR guy. He's on a plastic gun forum somewhere right now typing "...so I'm breaking in my rifle and this guy next to me has some kind of anti-aircraft cannon...I almost $hit myself when he said he couldn't see his front site...."

Re: MFS 203gr

I tried the 203 out on the range as an alternative to take hog hunting. It caused me to buy one of those neoprene limb savers (if you tell anyone I'll deny it) for the 91/59. It shot low out of that carbine as well, but manageable at "Pig" ranges with a hold over. Still haven't harvested a...

Yeah I'll bet somewhere around March of '39 they looked over in to Czechoslovakia and thought "Sh@t! We better build some rifles!"

Re: Which one of you did this?

Seriously though, that 1.2 Miles got me looking a the table. I never look at arcs out past 300, but Wolf is showing a 47 inch drop at 500 yards. Shooting at a man sized target, that is surprisingly doable, I think the hold over on a .223 is something like 63 inches at the same range. Now I have to g...

JoeR hit it on the head...you could have said "I found a Mosin that someone turned in to a canoe paddle, then refurbed back to the point where it can fire single feed shots, should I buy it?" and we would say, "YES!!"
