When I bought my rifle I did buy 15 rds of surplus just so I had something to shoot the first time. After firing them (yes I do know they are corrosive and cleaning is needed after no matter what.) and I need to buy more ammunition, is there any that I should not look at? I do want to buy non-corrosive but still any companies to not buy from?

Buy all of it and buy alot. But seriously i would buy the surplus. Way cheaper. If you are a reloader then buy brass and save it. I like privi brass.

You can get 20 round Tulammo and 20 round Brown Bear for $14 in quite a few places. Sure you can buy 440 rounds or 880 rounds, but if you only need a few rounds for plinking well, not really any sense in paying $160 or $300 for ammo then.

I'm one of those people that believes that more is better. With prices of $62-70 for a 440 rd can, I cannot even justify buying non surplus ammo. You can even get lead core surplus for those prices and not have to worry about steel core rounds. It never surprises me how quickly I use ammo... Last weekend I did a Halloween "Zombie Shoot" and most people were using .22 and various AR platform weapons as well as as pistols. I was using a CZ82 and my M44 WITH bayonet extended just for fun. I used a lot of ammo on the zombies. I'd go broke if I didn't buy in bulk. BTW amongst all those other weapons, everyone else knew I was there. It is an indoor range and people were coming up to ask questions. I overheard such things as, "You can feel the shock wave from way over here" and from my wife who was 6 lanes away, "The muzzle blast is really bright." Light was about 90% normal so it was real dark. Great low light practice and a lot of fun.

I have been poking around to find the best deal I can on surplus rounds. I have found a few and I am sure I will be ordering some more very soon. as for head spacing I have located the coin style but not sure if its something I really should just buy or just take it to a gunsmith.

Where are you finding it for $62. for a 440 round spam can? Cheapest I can find is $85. Per can

I only ever bought the non corrosive stuff for the SVT40 because cleaning the gas system for salts is just a pain in the ass. All the Bolt Mosins I shot with surplus from all over the commie world. Some might have been a bit more accurate than others but it all worked OK.

Here's a heads up too. Cope's Distributing is going to have the Rusty tins sale again soon. They only have about 150 of them coming so they'll go fast. I'll let you all know when I see them if anyone's interested.

I have read somewhere that none corrosive ammo for Mosin simply do not exist, they all corrosive , I am not claiming it to be 100% accurate , just sharing the info .

Edit: I'll add maybe what you've heard is guys say they treat all ammo like it's corrosive especially and including Com-Bloc/European made ammo.

The only rounds I have been warned to stay away from are the black/red tipped API rounds designed for machine guns. There are supposed to be 2 styles, regular 7.62x54r API ammo, and the stuff designed for aircraft or machine guns. Looks almost the same, but has a slightly thicker rim and a crimp up around the neck. These are supposed to be loaded to higher pressures and can kaboom a Mosin. I have not tried any though. I think the pictures are on the 7.2x54r.net site.

Stay away from the green tip ones also, these are tracer rounds, red tip for us, green for the commies. Great way to start fires.

I try to stick to brass cased ammo and all of what I get is surplus. I routinely clean all my rifles like it was corrossive ammo whether it is or not because lots of times although the powder maybe non-corrosive the primers are not, this is especially true with imported ammo and most of what we see today is just such an import. I bought a bunch of ammo in bulk and more than likely will be shooting that till I die. with storage and choice of what I want to shoot that day the only problems. I don't usually hunt much anymore so soft points are still around here if I choose to hunt. Buy in bulk at a good price then when it goes up in price you are still fine. Bill

Smokeless powder is not corrosive like the old Black powder was, however it can be hygroscopic if left sitting in a bore for a long time, so all weapons need to be cleaned after they are shot. Primers however can contain salts, and military surplus ammo is were they are used.

I generally try to avoid the incoming ones.

A good plan that aids longevity
