SIG M24 "straight barrel" (Showcase Submission)

Post by bb91 »

Hey guy's, here is one that's a little hard to come by and treasured by many "Finn" collectors.

It's a Finnish M24 which was produced for Finlands Civil Guard, it is sometimes spoken of as a "Lotta's rifle" as a result of the contribution/fundraising by the Finnish ladies auxillary which was instrumental in paying for these upgraded rifles.

This rifles barrel was made by the Swiss company, Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft, which is also referred to as SIG for short, it is one of the first order of M24 barrels from that manufacture and were produced to the same spec.s as M91 barrels.

From my reading of the mosinnagant.net website, that information states 2500-3000 non-stepped barrels were produced, making it fairly uncommon today.

Further information suggest that according to it's stamped matching Civil Guard district number(S 1466), it is in the range of the roughly 6665 rifle numbers assigned to the Helsinki district.

On to the pic.s!

I would dearly love to find a rifle like that one. I say you post it up so we can all drool over it frequently and long.

That is indeed a tough one to find and missing from my collection. That screw holding the band in place is non-standard for a Finn and in fact I have never seen that type holding the bands in place anywhere in any of the Finns of any model. Is the threaded section of that screw straight cut with machine threads or tapered with a wood screw threading? It is funny I have never even seen one of those in the wild with all the Finn's have seen. Rare in my world for sure and Ted's world lists it at a 9 in rarety. If you look real close on the bottom of that barrel sometimes there will be a small four sided diamond with a two digit number and that should be the year the barrel was made. I think they run in the 1925 to 1928 years if the barrel is indeed even marked. Dolk has them 1924 to 1929 and more than likely is right but I have only seen them in the years I have posted. Most I have seen seem to be in the 1927 and 1928 years. Like I said I have only seen stepped barrels so maybe the non-stepped barrel ones are not even marked? The mark is very small and very hard to spot! Congrats on finding a hard one to get and enjoy it! Bill

Zeebill, Hi!

I too thought that the screw was unusual, maybe even one of a kind, but the other day I saw that JYD also has a similar threaded retaining bolt on his m24, it seemingly has a round nut on the backside, I cannot say for sure as I have not attempted to remove it.

Also If you visit the mosinnagant.net website and look at one of the M24's Vic has posted on there, you can see a similar fastener, so it is not completely unprecedented and more common than I thought.

Here is a picture of the backside for you to see.

Also-
Especially for a Showcase submission, can you please add a picture with all of the accessories?
That's an area not touched on this sight much at all and would probably do a lot of educating to the newer collectors.
You've worked extremely hard to acquire those items and they need their time in the spotlight as well!

This is a sight to behold. I remember the unusual screw near the band on JYD's rifle too. It was the item that caught my eye. I would think this would be a prime showcase example, and yes, with accessories.

Yes, if you check the video you will see it.
