Could it be that after 8 rounds of that blast and recoil you may be flinching a bit?

I have not tried my M44 for accuracy at 100 yards. My old eyes don't give me much chance at that range with open sights.

Mostly I am happy to bust milk jugs at about 75 yards.

Do you use sand bags or are you shooting off hand?

The accuracy is what you get when you shoot it, it can be keyhole's in the target, to MOA precision five rounds in a spot covered by a quarter. You just never know what you will get until you try them.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I can only speak from my own experience. My friend has an m44 carbine and he is relatively accurate with it. He set a pineapple against his backstop (225yds) and was probably hitting it with about 50% of his shots. Now, he was shooting with irons at a brown fruit sitting on some dirt, so, it was very difficult to see his target. He also set up a bowling pin and a man hole cover, neither of which are difficult to hit repeatedly. Those are relatively small targets at 225 yds with irons.

JYD The way I understand it is that precision is measured by the size of the group while accuracy is the placement of the group on the target relative to the point of aim.

But isn't both "what you get when you shoot it"?

A shooting vise would have to be used to measure the intrinsic precision capability of a rifle. (Although that would actually be the precision capability of the rifle/vise combination.)

Then the achieved precision would be determined by the intrinsic precision in combination with how well a person can control the rifle and be consistent with sight picture trigger pull etc..

Most shooters can be a lot more precise by shooting bench rest than off hand.

The accuracy can be changed by adjusting the sights.

Try it with the bayo extended. Most of these shoot 6-12 inches high at 100 meters and wiuthout the bayo likely a few inches to the left. Hold 6 o clock and to the right and you should get there. I ha ve a non refurbed M44 that will do a good 4" or more with me at the wheel. That is totaly amazing as i am blind as 2 bats makin it in the dark. I have a well used M38 that does better then that one. :D

I can hit milk jugs at 75 yards with mine consistently, cold and warmed up.

I was using Czech silvertip in a 1944 Model 44 Izhevsk with the bayonet extended.

That is what me, my carbine, and my ammo can do.

Sounds like you are an experienced shooter , so yours should be able to also.
I take it that you know about tightening action screws etc.

BTW At 7 meters I can hit milk jugs 5 out of 5 while hip shooting.

Shooting with a carbine is not my cup of tea and I rarely shoot them anymore. I shoot off the bench using a rest and with arms like spiderman (37" inseam of a shirt) so I run out of places to put them with a carbine. I even have trouble with modern rifles if they are short. The sight is adjustable on an M44 and rather than look like you are going to war with the bayonet out it is more than possible to adjust the front sight blade. That is why they are made with adjustments to use them.

I can generally if I concentrate get a 5 or 6 inch group out of any rifle at 100 yards with pratice to get use to the feel and trigger. Ammo makes a lot of difference from rifle to rifle so be sure to try and find what each rifle likes. It is fun to spend time at the range and I try not to be in a rush when I am there. Take Care and Good Luck with your M44. Bill

Precision and accuracy are not words usually associated with my shooting  Prayer, and luck would be more like it :chuckles: I rest the rifle on sandbags and have at it at 100 yards, the limit of my ability to see the target with any reliability. Shoot five rounds, check the placement on the target, shoot five more to be sure, and then either drift the sight, or most of the time revert to Kentucky windage to adjust POI, elevation I always expect to be high, sometimes I am wrong and the rounds hit the bottom of the target right were I had been aiming. There was never any serious deviation between different arsenals ammo when I shot them out of my rifles. There was some deviation, some groups would open up, or close up a bit when I shifted from Albanian to Czech, or Hungarian, but we are taking an inch here, not a mile. I can control the weapon, handle the trigger, recoil passes without notice, but I can't see for shit and that is the ruination of more than one shot.
