Which is more collectible?
Which is more collectible?
Hi all,
I'm about to buy my first M91/30 and was wondering which is a more collectible year (and factory?).
I have a choice of the following with matching numbers:
TULA- 1936,1937,1939,1942. there's also a 1938 but with many scrtches on the stocks.
Izhevsk - 1937, 1938,1939,1940,1942,1943. No 1941
Any help would be appreciated...
Thanks
Sam

Re: Which is more collectible?
I'd leave the 42 and 43's there. As for the others they are all about in the same boat I think. Are the stocks all refurb stocks with the box and slash through it on the the stock? If there are some in pre-war stocks I'd start there. Maybe one has a double date or some other cool mark that the others don't. Narrow it down a bit and one will call out to you. Just my beginners opinion. If the 36 Tula is a hex that might be a good one. Transitional year I think.

Look at the bore and crowns. A $9 bore light is useful, but if you pull the bolt you can hold the barrel up to the light. If they are all comso look to see how well defined the lands are in the crown. Most accuracy loss is from a bad crown.

Re: Which is more collectible?
I would look them all over and assume that they are all worth exactly the same. Get the one you just can't stand to leave behind. Worrying over collectability will come in good time. Get the one you'd like to own and show your friends the most. Unless the 36 is a hex then I would grab it.

Re: Which is more collectible?
All are pretty much the same as far as collecting goes, unless they have a "special" mark.
Condition is the next thing on the list. Including bore condition, counter bored, bangs and dents, quality of the machining, smaller the import mark the better (no import mark is best, but that's not going to happen).
If they are re furbished, then they will probably be a "matching serial #'s" (forced matched). But make sure the #'s all match.
If the barrel has a great big huge "bow" or "warp" in it, then pass on it.

Get the best one condition wise. Worry about dates & markings after your 20th Mosin.

For me, Bore condition with a nice tight muzzle are first priority. Tula arsenal second.

Just buy them all, that's what I did, just couldn't make up my mind.

Re: Which is more collectible?
I'm sorry, I was just playing around with the "rank" features on the board!
May or may not stay the way it is. Everyone starts from scratch because I can't change the "posts count"....yet!
As time goes on it is important for "new people" to know something about the people giving them advice. Sheer post count is not always a way of knowing that, but.....nothing is perfect!
Actually, I'm just screwing around with the forums and seeing what they can do, just be patient with me! Let me know if it bugs you. You can always PM me anytime and tell me "cut it the heck out" (or what ever) if you don't want to post it. I like the input, and it helps keep me on flat ground!
