1940 M38 & M91/59 Izhevsk

Post by Junk Yard Dog »

Two old friends back for some new pics since I seem to have lost the old ones. 1940 Izhevsk M38 carbine, refurbished with a whole bunch of little stamps, most of them on the mystery list, 1/4" counterbore with clean lands and grooves in the bore, stamped forcematched with a wartime stock
1940 M91/59, also Izhevsk, this former M91/30 has all the typical markings and modifications found on the 91/59's, rear sight markings partly eliminated, barrel cut down and recrowned, note that it is about 1/2" longer than the M38's. Solid wartime stock with a very light shellac cover that almost looks like an oil finish, and one brass cap on the handguard. Stamped matching including on the stock ( another 91/59 thing. The M38 is a pretty good shooter, 4" groups at 100 yards are not out of the question, the M91/59 is of course nearly amazing, 2 MOA or better at the same 100 yards, better eyes could get this down to 1 MOA I think, but all my friends are old farts with shit eyesight like mine so we will never know  Beautiful trigger on the '59, I wish I had bought more of these rifles back in the day, however I am glad I have the four I managed to obtain.

I am starting to bring a few out of the cosmoline for fall play time, the 91/59 was so popular last year it has been requested again this year by my pistol shooting friends when we head up north for a shoot sometime in the next few weeks. I still have to finish cleaning them, the M38 picked up a lot of dust when I was fooling around with the leaves in the pic, cosmoline attracts all sorts of dirt and sticks it on.

Very nice, and the only example I have ever seen with brass on only one end. I wonder if the other end is paint over brass?

The 1942 Has brass on only one end as well. They probably just grabbed what was on top of the parts bin when they needed a cap, brass or steel would not have mattered to them.

Well, we know that he has at least two Mosins. They are both in the same picture!

And nice carbines, as well.

Nice rifles Dawg.

Speaking of 1/2" counter bore. When a rifle is counter-bored 1 1/2", do you think that means it was counter-bored more than once? My m91 is counter-bored back to the sights.
I can't imagine how you would ruin the grooves so far down the muzzle.

The older rifles had more damage at the muzzle and so needed a longer counterbore. The Finns did most of the M91 counterbores and would have only gone as far as needed. Most of the Soviet refurbs were probably done in batches no matter if they needed it or not. On some rifles that did need it the work wasn't done so there is no figuring them.

1940 M38... Now there's a year not too easy to find. I'm still working on getting a guy in town to sell me his very nice 1940 Tula M44... But he insists on keeping it. :vsad:
