USAF M16 604 Build Complete.

Post by ffuries »

Been working on getting a Faux 604 built (No fun switch). Well everything was moving along pretty good until it came to the A1 rear sight drum pin and the front sling swivel pin. They didn't want to go in no matter what I did, I became so frustrated I felt it best that I walk away before I broke something. Then my Sciatica kicked my ass and it sat there unfinished.

Well, I was sitting here staring at the idiot box, and decided to give the two pins another shot, and fifteen minutes later I was looking at a "COMPLETE" Faux USAF M16 604.

20 inch pencil barrel, A1 pistol grip, A1 rear sight, A1 front sight, triangular handguards, Type D buttstock, slab side upper (No forward assist, no shell deflector), 3 prong flash hider, green M1 style sling and small pad ejection port cover.

Thanks Steve, I wanted something like I carried, hence the M16 (604) and M16A2 clones. I just can't get into the Swiss Army Knife versions some people make.

Granted I did see some pretty impressive setups when I was downrange (SEALS, Green Berets, Delta, etc), but I never carried anything like that.

Now I either need to find the (my) ammo stash, order some more ammo, or get some at the Gun Show this weekend. But I need to get them out and I need some Trigger Therapy.

Here's a comparison shot of the Faux M16 (604), M16A2, and M4 style rifles in the house.

Man when I was wiping the ARs down, after handling them I was surprised at the weight difference between the M16 604 and M16A2 645.

Unloaded M16 604 weights approximately 6.5 lbs
Unloaded M16A2 645 weights approximately 7.5 lbs

So there is only a pound difference between the two, but it feels much more.

It looks good, Mike!

Even weighing a pound more, Id have still preferred an A2 over my A1, I'd have never used the fun switch on one anyway.

When I get further on my A1 build I'll post my progress with pics.

This will have to do for now:

I'd love to find a 80% lower and have it marked properly for my 604, but I don't have the patience or skill set to finish the lower off. Ours were just marked M16 for the model number. Plus get one marked M16A2 for my A2.

I do have the AF Form 1297 Temporary Issue Receipt with the SN for Beretta M9 I carried during Operation Desert Storm. Would be awesome if I could get that engraved on a M9 Commercial.
