Ariska Type 99

Post by B24 »

Stopped by a local pawn shop on the way home after work and and they had a Type 99
sitting in the rack but there is one problem, bubba. The stock has been cut but the metal
and bore were decent and the mum was perfect, not touched in any way. The tag had
$150 marked on it. I did a quick check on some stock prices after I got home and a
stock will be as much as the gun. I was hoping to save it but maybe I'll find one that
hasn't been messed with.

Good on ya for passing that one up. Type 99s also had matching bayonet lugs so you would've had to find not only the correct type of stock for that rifle's series but also the correct matching bayonet lug as well. With the sportered arisakas the rule of thumb for me is unless the rifle has sentimental value or can be had for very cheap then I don't bother with it. Save your money and find a nice unmessed with one with matching numbers as it's value will hold and eventually will be an easy sell.

Yeah hold off, you can still find Arisakas for $200 if you keep an eye out on forums. (Maybe a last ditch one but still better then a Bubba rifle)

I was in the same boat as you, found a Type 99 with beautiful mum and nice shiny bore, but mismatched bolt. Store wanted $399 plus tax, I passed.

Lucky for me, posted an ad on Armslist and arranging a meeting with a guy for a beautiful early Type 99 with AA sights and monopod for less than one at store, only downfall is no mum

Don't obsess about the mum, it's only one marking not the entire rifle. Remember that an intact mum means the enemy died and we picked up his toys from next to his rotten corpse, scrubbed mum means the enemy lost the war and we took his toys away. Either way the rifle has a story to tell.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.
