New to this forum and I don't want to start off on the wrong foot.Here's the deal I recently got my hands on a 1938 91/30 the bolt and receiver have matching #s,the bore is like new.The problem is who ever had this old jewel before me sanded and painted the stock in a camo pattern.So heres the question should I have the stock professionally stripped lightly sanded and apply a rubbed oil finish or what?

The Soviets used shellac, it is still possible to just buy a spare stock that has the original finish still on it and just swap it to your action. The camo stock sounds like it's done. Welcome to the board.

I bought a complete 91/30 stock with handguard and Barrel bands from Numrich gunparts a few months back. I thought I paid around $50

Welcome, like JYD said, it is beyond repair and only a new stock can help you out. No need to rush finding a new stock you can shoot it no matter if it is original or not. A new stock will come along.

Thanks guys I kind of thought that was going to be the answer.I have done some research and there seems to be a difference in the inletting of the different years or are they basiclly the same

No hand fitting necessary to put original 91/30 metal in an original 91/30 stock.

As stated above; Your best off replacing the stock. Hope to see some pictures of your rescued rifle when you get that replacement wood.
