My First C&R Rifle (SKS)

Hello everyone, I receiver my first SKS last week and this is my first regular posting.

I got lucky as my SKS was pretty much free of cosmoline. I did however detail clean the bore, receiver and bolt assy.

All the serial numbers are the same, I guess that's a good thing ?

It has not been fired by me yet and I'm waiting for the Head space gauge and will check it before
I shoot it.

I bought some 7.62x39 ammo from Walmart, it's the Tula brand, it says on the box, Made in Russia
hope it's OK ?

This should be a lot more fun than shooting a 22 .

Nice :), the Tula ammo is OK, the Russians have a slight familiarity with manufacturing this cartridge.

Very nice SKS. You might want to carry the 22 also to help slow the pace of burning up ammo [emoji14]

Pull the bolt and make sure the firing pin is loose and rattling back and forth. The channel for the pin can get gunked up easily and turn the SKS into a slam-firing machine gun.

Congrats, have fun! (and bring lots of ammo)

Thanks for the cleaning tips :!:

I did clean the rear housing, recoil spring assembly, trigger and bolt, yes the firing pin moves freely :)

I applaud your thoughts on headspacing.

In my experience with SKSs I've never had or found an issue with them, typically if the bolt is matching, head space is commonly not an issue. These weapons will display signs of head space issues well before it becomes an issue.

But, again, I congratulate you on the safety factor, as many including myself typically don't check until a problem arises.

And, thats a nice looking factory /26\ Chinese

Going to the range today or tomorrow , replaced the front sight post with a smaller ball type i got from Midwest, will see how it does. Will post results. We live about 15 miles to the west of Brunswick, The sub base is about 30-40 miles down 95 from us. We know it well because one of our favorite campgrounds :BBQ2: that we take our rv to is rite near the base.

Well, trip to the range was a flop, ( as far as sighting in the new front post. I knew it was longer than the original, but seemed to screw in far enough " wrong " tried to adjust it at the range and it bottomed out. Got home and took about a 3/16 of of it, looks good. Maybe back to the range in the am.

Good day at the range, happy, happy, happy. Got the new front post just where i want it, going to add a litter paint to it, not sure red or some other day glow color. No one else at the range, so as i was getting ready to leave, thought i would try a few shots at my new 8" Gong, had to jury rig it to the upright (public range ) and it fell after my first 3 shots, but it was fun, going to make a folding support for it.

I have an M38 also, where didyou get that post ?

he got it from Smith sights, a former board advertiser. There have been some threads on that topic on the board over the last year or two.
