Brazilian M1908 DWM (sort of)

Here is a recent pick up that I got for a pretty fair price. This is a Brazilian M1908, manufactured in 1913. After doing some research in an attempt to date it, I found that 100,000 of these rifles were subcontracted to Oberndorf by DWM in order to fulfill the Brazilian order. I'm thinking the rifles themselves were shipped to Oberndorf to complete assembly since it appears there was some correction work done on the receiver rail by the Oberndorf folks. This rifle is in beautiful condition and fully matching right down to the extractor. The stock is even stamped on the outside as well as inside the stock and within the handguard. All cartouches are deeply stamped. Stock looks brand new. The only downside to this rifle is the bore which was thickly powder fowled and appears to have some pitting-hard to tell though. The lands are in good shape though. I'm thinking of a hot clean at the range, maybe even today. Rifle is chambered in 7mm and has exceptional headspace.

Blew out the bore. Didn't get super hot because half my surplus ammo doesn't go bang But, got around 10 rounds through it. All the build-up is gone. Actually, doesn't look too bad all-in-all. Some micro pitting left behind I think but I'm fairly happy with the outcome.

I have seen quite a few Brazilian Mausers and only a couple as nice as yours and that is saying something!

Nice one, congratulations. This rifle was completely made at the Mauser works at Oberndorf - at that time belonging to the DWM company (like FN in Belgium, too). DWM was split up only after WW I when Mauser (and FN) became independent again. It is correct that at least the production of about half of the second batch of M1908s (200,000 rifles) made for Brazil was done by Mauser at Oberndorf (denoted by the stamping "Oberndorf" like yours, while the remainder were made by DWM at Berlin and accordingly showed a "Berlin" stamping, too). Wow 7x57 great information and much appreciated. I speculated that the rifle had been sent already stamped by Berlin because the stamping on the receiver rail look "fiddled with" . It really does appear double stamped or stamped with BERLIN, partially scrubbed and then re-stamped OBERNDORF.?.
