New to me Polish M44, general questions about it

Hello everyone,

I just pickd up my second Mosin today, a Polish M44, in really nice condition. I know some are said to be in unissued condition, and this one certainly looks like it has never seen any hard use by anyone, much less Cold War era soldier. It is a 1953 model, and the bluing and stock look amazing. So my question is this..were these ever meant to be issued to troops, or were these in this condition simply stored away and never used? I figure rifles more modern than an M44 rifle would be already taking over in Poland at the time, like the SKS's or even early AK-47"s..I am guessing, I do not know. From what I have found online there were Polish "Unissued" rifles imported into the US of course, and from what I saw online they do not seem to be especially rare. I am also assuming that this is not some nice refinishing job. Any info that anyone can share would be great.

Congrats it look every bit as good as the Russian I bought several years back. I'm sure yours will be a fine shooter.

Unissued ones are out there. Price usually reflects the near perfect condition they are normally in. There are some beaters out there too.

I have one of the unissued ones, came with unissued Polish accessory's back in '94. It's still in it's arsenal condition from when I bought it 20 years ago, it's never been near a range, or more than a few feet away from it's case in all that time. A brand new condition Polish M44 with zero wear. That's a nice one you have , probably was like mine years ago, but has seen a little range use, not everyone can stand to stash a rifle away and never shoot it. :)

Yeah, thats the hard choice I need to make..I want take it out to shoot, but because it's so clean, but I was thinking what kind of wear I would add to it. So I may put a few rounds through it and find me another run of the mill M44 to use as my weekend shooter. I was shocked, (being new to mosins) having only seen Mosins in the normal used condition from arsenal refurbishment. I had no idea ones with bluing and stocks like this were around. The bluing is incredible. As good or as any modern blued rifle. Smooth and clean, almost perfect I'd say. And the bolt is significantly smoother than my 91/30 from Wideners. I love it. I can't wait to to get another M44 to take out and put through its paces though. Thanks for the info everyone.

So long as you don't drop it, or bang it around just shooting it in the limited way most of us do you are unlikely to hurt it. In my case I had other M44's at the time, and many more today, I have never had to shoot the Pole.

I have a 46 M44 that looks unissued (it's not) with a mirror bore. I shoot it regularly but only with noncorrosive ammo.

That is a nice carbine alright. Welcome to the forum powers. You can find a carbine to use as a shooter, and also find that it will likely shoot as good anyway. Just because these look new doesn't mean they will shoot better than one that is broke in well, but in good condition.

Nice looking Pole for sure. :Drool1: I think you should shoot it and enjoy it. If you are careful not to bang it up against stuff, shooting wont do anything terrible to it that isnt already done. External dings are the main concern now that has already been fired. Heck, you can do more damage leaving it in the safe to get nicked by other rifles going in and out (if you dont put a protective sock or something on it).

Yeah, I will definitely take it out to play. But I will also get more Mosins..I really want a good run of the mill one to keep in the truck on the property for fun. Researching all the marks and trying to to learn as much as possible about them. I still wonder how these got imported in such great condition. The fit and finish on this Polish example seems to be pretty high. Everything seems very well machined. I can't wait to try it out.
