finding rifle range ammo

I am new to MN rifles and shooting sports. Just bought a M44 from Classic. I also bought some of their 7.62 x 54 R Silver tip 149 Grain I understand this has a steel core or shank?? not 100% sure on that, but the local rifle ranges in Dallas Texas area are saying the ammo needs to be lead, not FMJ, no steel core or military ammo. Does anyone know where I can find an acceptable lead core for use a these public rifle ranges? The name /number of the ammon. Thanks for the help.

Good morning cclark75006. Hey I live near you in Mesquite, and while Garland Public shooting range is my favorite place, they have a no FMJ rule so when shooting surplus ammo I go to the Gibsons Outpost in Mesq near Forney. It's a outdoor range located on Lawson Rd.

Sorry to revive such an old thread, but this is basically the same question I have. Before I spend $0.70-0.80 per round for Prvi or other jacketed soft-point or hollow-point ammo, I'd love to know whether its jacket is "bimetal" or something else magnetic that might cause some of the other, non-FMJ ranges to reject its use.

And then, what about ammo like this Wolf soft-point? http://ammunitionstore.com/products/7-6 ... -case.html I know it says the case is bimetal (steel or copper-washed steel or something?), but how can I be sure there isn't a steel jacket or a steel core there that'll screw me up?

That ammo you linked to is copper washed steel cased and the jacket is bi-metal (steel alloy, copper washed) and it's magnetic from top to bottom. The bullet is lead core though since it's soft point. If your range rejects steel cased or steel jacketed ammo this is probably not going to be accepted but that all depends on why they're rejecting the ammo they reject. Some ranges reject steel core ammo which is what most surplus is but most of that is also steel jacketed. Other ranges still reject steel jacketed ammo even if it's not steel core because it's a bit harder on backstops and targets and can be a fire danger. Then there's the ones that simply reject all ammo that attracts a magnet anywhere.

This is range safe ammo but it's FMJ and you wouldn't want it for hunting if that's one reason you're looking for soft point. It's also steel case but the bullet itself is copper jacketed, lead core and non magnetic. If they are one of the ranges that reject anything being steel there's others available that are all non magnetic. Red army standard is non-magnetic, and I've had very good results with it.

Just so he doesn't get confused what I posted was links to Red Army Standard but not all Red Army Standard is non magnetic. Actually that ammo I posted isn't totally non magnetic. Just the projectile and that's what most ranges care about though some even won't allow that. The do have a Red Army Elite which is completely non magnetic because it's brass cased and copper only jacketed but that stuff isn't cheap. Sam usually list any of this stuff as "range safe" because he knows that ranges are picky about a lot of this type ammo.
