1936 or 1938?

I'm looking to get my first rifle of the year and wanted to post this up for your opinion. (I just had Lasik yesterday and my close up vision hasn't come back around yet!). Does this look like a 38 or a 36 to you? The seller says it's a 38. I don't have a date for the receiver at this time, so no real help there.. Whether that last digit is a 6 or an 8, it's interesting either way... just wondering what you guy's thought..

1936. Seller's are sellers... I bought an advertised 1933 that was really the 1935 that I was looking for. :D

That's in line with what I was thinking then. It is also on a hex receiver (no imperial eagles or other markings there), so 36 would absolutely make sense.

Definitely 36... I have one just like it where the 6 is heavier than the 139

The tang date will tell the tale.

True, but remember that 1936 is one of those years where they occasionally left the last digit off of the date and then stamped it later. I've seen a lot of examples of it from this year. :2cents:

Unfortunately looks like I won't get to bring this one to show and tell here. Its an auction piece that I have been leading for the past week but a new high bid came in and I just can't match it and feel good about it. This one is pretty interesting. 1936 Tula, no Russian refurb. It has the F.L.P. Mi. On the left of the barrel shank (Latvian Fire Extinguishing Police). It is also [SA] stamped with Finn sling hangers. Would love to have been able to vet it but at the current price and taxes and transfer and shipping... Oh well. Somebody is getting a cool piece of history. Hopefully somebody here..

It's a very interesting piece guys. Even has the hang tag with it. Sorry it didn't work out Lotema. :vsad:

Thanks hammer. That's two strikes this year. Missed this and that beautiful '47 laminate. Third times the charm. Waiting for burns to add some new inventory...
