On the last 3 inches their is a little splice. Hope you can see it in picture. Is it something common?

Yes, more common than you would think. These woodworkers did a great job repairing these rifles. This area was a common weak point and often cracked. A lot of us pride ourselves on how many repairs we have :D

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
