finally bought my first Polish M44, questions

Post by jdolinski »

Bought a 1952 Polish M44 locally today, non matching. trying to confirm the bolt. I think it's Hungarian? it has 02, 72 and 25 stamped on all the parts. I have not taken pictures yet except for the bolt, but will get them up soon. I am really pleased with it, the condition is very good especially for what I paid. the bore is dark but I think it will clean up. Stock is nice, not unissued but nice. I would appreciate any input on the bolt.

Thanks

Pics of the rifle? Yup the 02 are hun parts. The poles gave the m44 as aid to the huns and they swapped parts around on some.

I'll get pictures of the rifle posted tomorrow, want to clean it some before taking pictures. :D :D
Am I correct in thinking that non matching is normal/ok?

I think it's ok because mine is non-matching and then I feel better about mine. I paid 140 for mine OTD at a gun show which I was pretty happy about. I didn't even know that a polish was good when I bought it I just got talked into it by my father-in-law.

It is ok as long as it passes headspace. It likely will, but it's best to check to be sure. Looking forward to seeing it.

Nice, the last stop on the Commie express for these rifles was Romania, the better off commie countries helped out the Romanians with some surplus rifles as military aid. While in Romania they were repaired when need be by having whatever parts would work swapped into them. You can find Hungarian, Polish, Russian, and Romanian made parts in any of these carbines, or all of these parts in them.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Nice one Jim. Your bolt is non-matching as are most of the EBLOC carbines, so it is not a surprise that the bolt is partially for fully Hungarian. Same as my non-matching Pole. My matching Pole, however, has no "02" parts what-so-ever.

I like the stock on this one. Looks 100% Arctic Birch from Hungary. :vcool:

Thanks, I am really happy with it. got it for a good price, I just need to find a cleaning rod for it. didn't realize it was missing till I got home. I did get a sling with it but not correct, might look for a correct one as well. Considering my last name I guess it was inevitable that I would get one. :D :D

It seems as if I have had a standing order for two carbine cleaning rods at Liberty Tree for ever. It might be a good idea for you to get a couple of them. You'll need the other one someday, trust me

I have a Romanian M44 with all matching numbers except for the bolt. Some of the numbers on my bolt are similar to yours. Mine had a dark bore too, and I found out the hard way that is was shot. Most likely not cleaned after shooting corrosive ammo. Bullets tumble at 20 yards and at 20 yards, I only hit the 24"x24" piece of paper once. Bullets were going all over the place. It’s a wall hanger. I’ll probably sell it to a collector.

I have a 91/30 with a dark bore, but it shoots fine. Hope the bore on yours is ok.
