Is Mosin Nagant Military Surplus ammo steel core?

Hello I purchased a crate of 7.62x54r ammo from Rguns, I want to shoot the rifle at an indoor range. The range rules say "No armor piercing, steel core, tracer or incendiary rounds". If it is steel core can you recommend a brand that is not steel core, then I will save the crate for an outdoor range.

Thanks
Harold

Yes, it is most likely steel core.but it is mild steel core unlike true AP rounds which have a hardened steel core. If they do the "magnet test" most other commerical brands (like wolf or tula or brown bear) won't pass becuase it it bi-metal, which is a steel jacket over a lead core, for indoor I would say PPU ammo would be best, hopes this helps!

No problem, what date is on the headstamp? Until about mid-late 1960s x54r surplus is lead core unless denoted otherwise by a silver tip. After the late 1970s they dropped the silver tip on the x54r ball becuase it was all steelcore.

The crate is dated 1975 I believe. There is also a silver diagonal stripe on the front of the crate.

Thank you, I will have to shop around for some Privi Partisan then so I can shoot at the indoor range. What grain bullet do you recommend :?:

I have expierance with only their 182grn FMJ-BT, I would do the 150gr soft point made by them. If you reload or even if you don't reload, try to pick up the PPU brass(if the range allows) becuase it is very good brass and you can sell it to others. Hope you have a great time at the range!

SGAmmo has both the Prvi 150 gr. SP and 182 gr. FMJ in stock http://www.sgammo.com/catalog/rifle-ammunition/762x54r If the range allows steel jacket lead core rds. SG has a boat load of Bear steel case 174 gr. ammo that's a few buck cheaper per 20 rds.
