Confession Of A Former "Scoper"

Post by rideandslidejim »

Well Guys
As hunting season quckly approaches i have decided to give up on my attempt at scoping my M38 i bought for off Gunbroker ( All original, except in a ATI stock ) just for a hunting rifle. After many inconsistent results at the range with the scope i am going back to the iron sights. I can get better pattern with them vs. the scope, maybe it me, maybe it's the scope, maybe it's the mount ?????? All i know is i can keep a pretty tight pattern on a 9" paper at 100 yards with the iron sight. So the scope is coming off and the iron sights back on.

FORGIVE ME FOR MY ERRORS

The only advantage a scope has for me is to count points on antlers. We have restrictions here, a deer has to have a certain number of points to be legal. When I carry a mosin I have a small pair of binoculars handy. If I don't have a chance to use the binos I just dont shoot.

We also have points limits here but I cant use a scope anyway. Is illegal for BP so I count points with the binoculars and then use open sights to SCORE

I do not use milsurp to hunt w/ period.

That's why I have a Remington 700 BDL Cal. '06 or CZ 550FS Cal .308 w/ and w/out scopes for deer.

For Pigs its the Ruger Cal. 44 carbine w/ open sights for thick brush and fast action.

All of the above named critters appear in the front yard field, but "Mother" doesn't allow shooting critters in the front yard, esp. her baby "raindeer". :angry4:

Although, she's been tempted to take a black bruin on the patio... :devil2:

I've had to explain to her that the DNR takes a very dim view of shooting bruins out of season. :chuckles: :chuckles: :chuckles:

I never had much use for a scope on a milsurp, sporting rifles are made for them, Milsurps are just awkward with them.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
